Hey guys,

I was handed down one of my grandfathers shotguns. It's a Remington Model 11. says 385741 under that. I assumed that was a sequential build number or some such.

Anyone know anything about these? Google hasn't helped me much yet, so I come to teh source that I trust the most.

What I know is this, It's a 12ga semi auto, hammerless, and it's dang old looking. I know, I over analyze too much.

So, I'm going to clean this puppy up and take it to the range and kill some clay with it. Should be fun!

It is a John Browning design that is a clone of the Browning auto-5. Remington made them under license for several years. It is recoil operated, has a lot of small parts and strong springs and needs to be kept clean. Have someone who is familiar with Browning Auto 5s to show you how to disassemble and clean.

Good gun, old design and heavy recoil. Sensitive to loads than you use. Probably best used with stouter hunting loads.

Jaysouth is correct. It is a clone of the Browning A-5. I grew up shooting my grandads Model 11. I thought all shotguns kicked that hard. ;)

It is a great gun and I have taken a lot of dove and turkeys with mine. It mainly sits in the safe now. It has a lot sentimental value and would hate for something to happen to it. Parts are getting harder to find them.

Clean it up and go shoot it. I bet you will like it.

Hehehe, I've got a great story about a Remington Model 11.

Last year, we were set up at the Bob Pope Gun Show, in Franklin, 'round 'bout springtime. Zach, my business partner, and the mechanical mad-genius of ETS, went walking around, looking for deals. He came back and said he found a Rem 11, for sale. The guy told Zach he could have it for $300. So, Zach grabbed an FFL and $300, and bought the gun - with evil, twisted thoughts in his head. The kind of thoughts that make me grin from ear-to-ear and make JMB roll-over in his grave.

Fast forward to the next morning, Sunday. First thing in the morning, Zach, his brother, and I set out on a gunsmithing / manufacturing mission. Adam held the stock on the table, and I held the barrel down, while Zach took a hacksaw and cut the barrel to 15.5", right there at the show. People were walking by, or stopping and staring at us like we had just crucified Christ. Their faces were a mixture of :ugh::shake::D :D :yuck::D and :puke:, with a few :P thrown in for good measure.

There were plenty of commentsalong the line of "WTF?", "That's illegal.", "You can't do that!", and "What are you doing?" We calmly (and slightly giddily from the excitement of doing what others wrongly thought to be illegal) explained that we could do it, as we are licensed manufacturers, and that we now had until the close of the next business day to notify BATFE that we had manufactured an SBS.

Then we went for a walk, to show the guy who sold us the gun. It was funny, seeing the looks we got from people as we walked around the building. A lot of people thought we were going to get arrested, I'm sure. lol Others were worried we had done it to an Auto-5. Liek I told them, if I had done it to an Auto-5, the line to kick my butt would have started with me.

It was funny as all get out, that's for sure. Oh, and the gun is quite fun, albeit a bit abusive. You can fire off 5 rounds quite quickly. In fact, when the last shell is in the air, the second one is just hitting the floor. It's about as fast as you can get for semi-auto.

I have one in 20 guage. It has engraved on the bar, ducks flying into a pond on one side and pheasants on the other side. It also has an external twist choke on the end of the barrel. I used it my whole life, until I bought my 870 Express way back in the early 90's. It was my grandfathers, my fathers, and still mine today, one of my son's will have it one day. I never had problems out of it and it shoots great. It shows wear and use, need to work on it one day when I have some spare time.

My story, while not quite as crazy as Frank's above, but still a great memory of me and my dad, we were dove hunting (I was in middle school) on a dairy farm near Dyersburg, we were having a decent day and I guess I had been fart'n around with the choke and had twisted it "too far", some doves flew over and I started blasting, after the second shot I noticed something big flying through the air out into the corn field.......yep, it was the choke! My dad calmly told me to get my a$$ out there and find it, and I wasn't leaving until I found it! I did! I also learned not to mess with that choke anymore.
