"Also starting Monday is a 90-day grace period in which residents who owned handguns illegally during the ban can register them without penalty."

But you still can't register more than one illegal handgun, right? You'll have to let the others lie dormant.

Why would Chicago citizens need a handgun? An assult rifle would be more appropriate in Obama's turf.

It seems there is a first case test against the ordinance. Seems a store owner is going after the ban on sales in city limits. Hope he wins.

There is allot of  in that.

Police Superintendent Jody Weis said that those who want guns must be fingerprinted, submit to a background check, pay a $100 application fee and then $15 for each gun they register. Police also said they are initially giving themselves 120 days to process applications.

The new law, which officials say is the strictest of its kind in the nation, was pushed by Mayor Richard Daley and passed by the City Council July 2, just a few days after the Supreme Court ruled on that Americans have a right to possess handguns for protection.

application fees, registation fees, what the hell.

seems I read something in another post that things like that may be challenged as unconstitutional in another thread.

How is it all that much different than here in TN up until last year? Other than the amounts being smaller...

TN required a fee to purchase every firearm ($10 instead of $15), and required thumb prints for every purchase.

And while we don't charge $100 for registration, we do charge $150 for a permit to carry.

The laws are bad just about everywhere.... including here, including Texas, including just about everywhere else... it's time for a change.

But we don't register each gun, or any gun. Well, except you NFA

owners:D , but that is another venue.

What he said!

Also to clarify that the 10 bucks you pay is the backgound check.

there is a big damn difference. In TN you can buy a handgun face to face and keep it loaded in your home without reporting it to the police or paying fees for that right. The 10 dollar fee is a background check when you buy from a FFL, but the gun even in this instance is not registered. And again you can keep it loaded in your home or carry it on your person while in the confines of your property.

If I want to have a carry permit I must pay, but there is little argument here that we have a right to carry a firearm off of your own property.

The $10 instant background check, right? I believe that is Fed mandated...

Um. No thumb print requirement to buy a firearm. There is a thumb print requirement for applying for a Permit allowing for open/conceal carry away your personal real estate property, and/or "home."

Mike.357 said it better than I did...

The 4473 is federal, but the $10 is mandated by TN statute.

There was up until about a year ago.

As many of you know, I am still learning allot of the terms, what is NFA?

Myself, I don't like the idea of registering any guns.

Think CLASS III, as in silencers, 'machine guns' or automatic weapons, sbr (short barreled rifles) etc..

Thanks for the link.

I read the example, turned to my wife and said, hey I can buy a Silencer, something almost everyone thinks is illegal to have.

She looked at me like i was crazy.

But it was a good read. No, not planning on buying a silencer.

As OhShoot already mentioned, the $10 "background check" is a TN law, not a federal law... Basically it's a jobs program and tax for the government... Because we could just use the federal system for free to do the background checks, but instead we use a middle man at the state who does little more than check the federal system and takes our $10 for the privilege. No different than the $15 Chicago fee per gun.

Also, as OhSHoot indicated until last summer, TN required thumb prints for all firearms purchases through a FFL... We finally did away with that silly law. (Which in the 20+ years it was enacted the LEO's only requested the thumb prints once, and that one time the prints were unreadable).

And I believe the main concern about gun registration most people have in confiscation... How many of us don't have a form 4473 sitting somewhere out there (either at the gun store or at the ATF)? You've been identified by a gun registration program as being a gun owner... when the government chooses to confiscate firearms you think they won't search your house because you said you sold that one firearm? While we're lucky that currently laws limit the governments ability to create a centralized gun registration database the data for that database is out there and a simple change in the law allows for that database to happen in a very short period of time. Our current gun registration system is very similair to the one in place in Germany before WWII, and they were able to confiscate the vast majority of firearms.

The Chicago law is bad, but don't think that TN is so much better (or virtually anywhere for that matter).

Everyone should have a silencer

And they are called sound suppressors not silencers. Silencers are fairy tale devices that only exist in movies. We wish they were real but sadly they are not.

Why risk your hearing when you hear that window break during the night? Defending your family should not cost your hearing. :):):)

I would not register a gun if I was a resident there, for that matter I would not do it here if suddenly it was required.

I'm with you on that. It only gives the government an easy list of people should they ever decide to start going door to door taking guns away. Personally I was raised to never let anyone know what all you have, because if you do eventually someone will steal it from you.

I try my best to be a 100% law abiding citizen these days for the most part, but if our government ever decides they want to push certain issues too far then they will force me into being a criminal. Personally I have the experience from past events, as well as the know how, to be fairly good at not obeying laws, so I've already made up my mind that if our government ever decides they want me to be a criminal then so be it.
