Keltec Experience

Recommended Posts

My PF-9 had some Fail to feeds and fail to fires last time I was at the range. I am afraid to carry it now, even in the backup roile I got it for, and want to send it back for repair to the co. I e-mailed them and they saud to Fedex or UPS it to them. Has anyone had any experience with

a. shipping a firearm back via fedex or UPS, and/or

b. having Keltec repair a gun.I've heard that they will sometimes do a fluff and buff as well as repairs...does one have to ask for this?

Would like to hear any experiences or advice you can give.

Had a P3AT that I sent back to Kel Tec a couple of years ago after it completely failed on me at the range one day. No problems sending it FedEx and I had it back in less than a month. And, yes, they did a fluff and buff on the feed ramp.

Sent a Kel .40 to them 10 years ago via USPS for fail to feed. Came back around 5 weeks. They only buffed the ramp. Problem continued. They like to blame limpwristing, but when you have the pinkie extension and a death grip on it but it still happens with you and other people on the gun in question, you wind up buying a bigger, better gun.

Curious Barewoolf, have you tried multiple brands, weight, loads of ammo?

Is this a gun you've had for a while and it just started having problems, or is it new?

Mine shoots fine, but can be finicky about some types of ammo, especially HP, and +p loads. Might want to try some standard pressure if you're using +p.

Shipping Fedex or UPS is pretty simple. Box it up, take it to a hub (not a mall store) and ship it out. Believe they will want it shipped overnight, at least Taurus wanted mine shipped overnight. Not cheap!

Good luck.

I bought a first generation P3AT a few years ago. It was a 'problem child' and was never really 100% - I'd address one issue and another would come up. Finally, when the hammer spring broke, I sent it back to the factory. Of course the P3AT is now in its second generation and there have been many changes/improvements/upgrades since the first gen.

Basically, just about the only thing left of my original gun when it was returned to me was the frame - Kel Tec built me a brand new, second generation P3AT on my frame and (from what I can tell by the work order that was returned with it) pretty much replaced all the internals. All this was free of charge, under warranty. The 'new' one has functioned 100%, so far, right out of the box.

I will say this - Kel Tec is notorious for not communicating well via email. When working with them, often a phone call is the better way to go.

As far as shipping via Fed Ex, etc. I don't know - my LGS owner sent it back for me. I figured it would be easier to pick it up at the store than to worry about someone being home to sign for it (I've heard that an adult has to sign for a firearm delivery but don't know from personal experience.)

I've had a few keltecs over the years; mostly pf9s and p3ats. I had to polish the feed ramps on most of them to make them work to my liking. Use 500 grit then step to 800 grit wrapped around a dowel sanding in the direction the bullet slides. Then hit it with some metal polish.

If I come up on a deal I will have another pf9.

KT's are well known to need a 300-500 rnd break in. However, I've had 3 PF9's at various times and all of them worked from day one. That being said KT's CS is the industry standard. If you want to send it in they will make it work or in a lot of cases send a new one that works.
