Strangest thing store sells, that you feel just doesn't seem to fit for the store.

Those are a lot nicer than the square cans you get from the VA. We had to put a Budweiser sticker on one just to dress it up. Long story.

I remember seeing a news story on TV about someone buying a kitchen canister set at walmart, service merchandise, etc., then getting it home and finding one of the canisters to be dirty on the inside. When they tried to return it, they ended up finding out that someone else had bought it previously, and had Dear Old somebody's ashes put in it after the cremation. Then, after having scattered the ashes, took it back and got their money back.

So, if you ever buy a container, then discover it to be dusty on the inside, you might wanna find out if it's been "previously owned".

Kidnapped a buddy after his funeral and took him bar hopping. Slapped a Budweiser sticker on the side, taped the lid shut, and off we went. Turned into an all day/all night afair. We never spilled him, or even dented his can.

After it was all said and done, he sat behind the bar on a shelf for 3 days before his daughter picked him up.

Well the "White Haven" model with it's white and gold bling, would go very well here in Memphis.....

The Memphis folks will get that I bet.

We've got time.

For the record...

When my dad passed, we were having him cremated. BUT, the funeral home requires that you be cremated IN a casket. So we had to buy a casket for the viewing/cremation. We bought the cheapest option that they had which was a purple carpeted cardboard box.

A few weeks later, a guy from the funeral home came to my house so that I could plan my funeral and start paying for it. When picking out everything, I, too, chose a cardboard box to be burned in.

Also, what does it say about me that I planned my funeral at age 25? I am still paying for it and will until sometime in 2015, but if I die, no more payments are necessary. Its like an insurance policy or something.

Hope it doesn't turn out like the Forrest Hill fiasco.

Also, my grandmother bought her pre-paid burial for like $13/mo. until the plan was paid off. Started in her twenties. When we buried her in '06, it still took another 4 grand to cover inflation.

You are very wise for planning ahead. What's that cardboard box costing? I bet it's around $1000?

AFAIK, cremation requires some type of container per state law. The funeral lobby in TN is very powerful. Need to check with my little brother, he is a mortician.:D

+1

All my people are there. Like back 4 generations. Occasionally when down there I'll stop by the office and have them check the records. Can't have them double-stacking on my kin. I even own land there myself, not that I'll ever use it.

Capbyrd, you are a head of me. What does it say about you, responsible.

I have made it clear to my family to bury me on the cheap. (pay for it out of money in my saving account, as I have not prepaid, however I know it probably should as it would be cheaper). I have not decided where I want to be buried, as the small grave yard where most of my family has been buried is nearly full. I know Dad has a spot saved near his Dad. His mom does not want to be there. I am pretty sure mom does not want to be there, probably not even in the state since she is not from TN.

I know I will want to be buried in TN.

But I have told them, cheap box, cheap everything, I have in short promised them I will not haunt them for it. Some in the family may believe in ghosts, I do not believe in hauntings.

My wife will probably make sure there is a 6 pack of Guinness with me, but as I have pointed out I won't be able to enjoy it. I don't want any extra expense paid.

I have a desire to build my own Viking longboat, have it pushed down the Mississippi with me, and all my stuff that I'm not passing down and that doesn't go boom when put in a fire, and lit on fire. Will this actually happen? Probably not.

If something like that happens now it will blow up the Gulf of Mexico.

I don't remember anymore but it wasn't cheap. I think it was between 750 and 995.

As for the Forest Hill thing, this is with a large national company that isn't likely going to be overtaken by anyone in that same manner. This is through Memorial Park on Poplar. My plot is right near the road, which is awesome cause my carcass will get to hear cars all day. I love cars. Funny thing is though, my dad's parents bought four plots there back in the 60's just across from the Grotto. They paid 400 for all four. I bought two plots in the cheapest part of the cemetary and mine were 2 grand each. Amazing how valuable that land became. My grandparents gave my parents two plots as a wedding gift. My parents had a child before I was born that didn't make it so he was already buried in one. He will be stacked on top of my mother. My father is right next to them and his parents are next to him. I wish I could have been closer to them but there were no available plots.

Back to the money part, Dad's funeral ended up costing around around 10 grand and with my burial plots, mine is a little more at like 13. I bought two plots just in case I ever get married. And for the inflation statement, per the agreement I signed, they can't ask for more money. My funeral is SUPPOSED to be paid in full when I make the last payment or if I die.

I've always told my friends and family to forego the mourning. Sell everything I own as quickly as possible. Use the money to fund the BEST PARTY EVER!!! and remember me that way!

Talk about strange thread diversions... sheesh!

Anyway, I'll play along.

I've left orders that I'm to be cremated and my ashes scattered over this hill I'm currently sitting on.

There's to be no funeral or service, and the cremation is to be done within 24 hours of my death, due to state law requiring it within that time period if I'm not to be embalmed.

( I want all of me cremated. Not just "most" with a good portion flushed down the drain. So, no embalming. )

That should be about the cheapest way imaginable to get rid of my dead carcass, short of just leaving it out in the woods somewhere.

Forgot to mention. She pre-paid again in '04 just to not have me pay. They said, "That's all." When it was over, I still had to pay a few more C notes.

Anyone know how many can be stacked? It'd be good if you could get back to your family.

I'm not sure. I was under the impression that the only reason my brother and mother were going in the same hole was because he was just an infant.

I believe in Japan you rent a space for a few years then the family has to come collect the bones. No land to bury in that country.

What was this thread about?

Hmm..... I suddenly have a good idea for that sinkhole in South America...

I wonder what it would cost to buy it?

Just for the record, when you die, nobody makes you pay for anything anymore...

I want to be cremated and tossed in the Ohio River.

and back on topic,

I used to work in a liquor store in Illinois and we sold donuts and coffee cakes, not prepackaged stuff but fresh baked goods delivered daily. Sunday mornings we did a booming business when church let out.

Nope. But they pass it on to your next of kin.
