How do I find out if/where I can shoot on my land?

Recommended Posts

I live in Nashville. My wife and I are thinking of investing in some rural acreage in Davidson or surrounding counties...likely a possible retirement "estate" - really just a big piece of earth so we are not right on top of the neighbors (when that time comes). We have also talked about setting up our own shooting range.

Question is, how do I go about finding out if it is legal for me to shoot on my own land (obviously safety first)?

We have looked at properties from 10 - 150 acres in Dickson, Williamson (college grove for one), and Sumner counties so far.

Any help out there?

Go to the local police dept or sheriff that patrols the area and ask. I did the same thing in Trousdale County when I bought land earlier this year.

Davidson may be more strict regarding discharge of a firearm. Not sure how many acres you are looking at.

you cannot shoot in the direction of where people may be or where there is a building where people may be.

If you can find land that does not violate these rules you are probably good to go.

I would recommend looking for land that has a big ass hill or a draw in it that you will own. Something that will swallow lead.
