Walther PPKS Bocote Grips

I didn't like the feel of the small plastic grips on my Walther, so I decided to make these with a larger width to blend with the sharp edge of the frame. The Bocote hardwood was great to work with, but the cutouts on the back was a bit of a challenge. I didn't put a finish on them but instead just polished them.

very nice. If you are taking orders, sign me up for a set!

Ditto that^^^ Those are really sharp.

How long did it take you to make them, it seems like it would be a time consuming thing. But definitely well worth it.

Thanks for the kind words. They do feel great, for I marked and cut each finger and thumb groove to my hand. I didn't keep up with the time of making them for I work and would work on them several nights over a two week period. I love to make grips for my handguns, but these were a little more difficult doing the inletting on the back side of the grips. Here are a set that I made for my SA V-16 Longslide .45 Super. The wood is wenge and I set a 1911 Barber dime in them. I bent the dime to contour with the grips. This is a lot of fun so try it and you will be happy to have a one of a kind set of grips made just the way you want them.

You Sir certainly have a talent. That 1911 dime is truly unique and I feel confident in saying it is surly one of a kind. Very cool.

I have the Hogue Kingwood grips on my PPK and really want to get the Tulipwood ones for it. But as much as I like the Tulipwood they dont come close to that wood you used on your PPK/S, I really like that stuff. And even any I could order are not and can not be contoured to my hands I would really love to have a set that was. That gun must feel wonderful in your hand.

I do think your talent could make you a few extra bucks if you were to devote the time to doing so. And if you ever do make sure you let us all know. I am sure you would have many orders just from this site.

Great job Eyeman! I make grips too, and I have a couple of nice pcs of spalted oak that I've been saving for my PPKS, but so far I've been scared off by the cutouts on the back.. Any advice? How did you mark those and remove the wood?

Thanks JPS. I actually did a combination of inletting and a build-up on the inside of the grips. I did not feel comfortable attempting to cut away the outside edge of the grip, so I did a build-up of the hollow portion of the gun frame. I used a thin piece of hardwood and glued it to the grip, which locks the grip in the proper position prior to putting in the grip screw. It is, of course necessary to inlet areas where it has to clear at the top edge of the grip. I did this with a dremel flat end cutter. Go for it JPS and make some pretty grips. Her is a photo of the interior of the grips and I hope this info helps:

I agree that it is some beautiful wood and those that you have are a good example. I am crazy about the black grain. I like the idea of being able to polish bocote, since it has a high oil content which makes it difficult to polyurithane. Pretty grips there BEARMAN!!
