What rifle does he have? Marlin makes a really good lever gun in a couple of barrel lengths. Ruger makes a good single shot, there are still trap door Springfield's out there, etc.

I love the caliber, but I like to shoot the lighter loads. There are basically three power levels to the 45-70. The old 1886 trap doors have to shoot light loads like 15 to 18 thousand psi, the lever guns shoot medium loads up to 28K and the falling blocks like the Ruger # 1 can take the heavy loads close to 458 Win mag performance. I don't like the recoil of those.

Find out what he has and post back, I would like to hear what he has.

marlin, cimarron cva, emf, h&r, navy arms, & new england all make rifles with this calibre. I read about some revolvers that shoot this calibre as well. ouch.

I have no idea. We had a brief conversation today about trading and he said that all he had left to trade was a .45-70. We got interupted and I didn't get a chance to talk with him anymore after that. I'll see what else I can find out about it.

Boomhower,

I have a Marlin in 45-70 that I deer hunt with. It is a great round and very accurate. The nice thing about 45-70 is there are so many different loadings for it. Like glockster was saying you can get lite loads and very heavy loads depending on what rifle you are shooting.

I shoot the 325 gr LeveRevolution from Horandy.

Here is a pic of my Marlin 1895.

I really like the 45/70!! I once had a Ruger #3 that was stolen from me back in '03. It was barely 6 1/2 pounds and had a butt stock like the mini 14. Less than 25 rounds of factory loads gave me a bruise about 6 inches in diameter on my shoulder. After I had Jeff Walle (smith at Specialty Arms, La Vergne) make a recoil pad for it, I fired over 120 rounds in one session with both factory and handloads, with no problem. Great rifle. I really miss that one.

A while back, I was able to pick up a beautiful bolt action, a converted 1943 Lithgow #III* SMLE by Gibbs/Navy Arms. Best $200 I ever spent! I was worried about the recoil at first because of the original metal butt plate. Turns out that it's wide enough to spread out the recoil and it doesn't bother me. I've fired factory loads in 300 gr. jhp and 405 jsp. Also 405 gr. handloads. I've got some 500 gr. cast lead bullets that I'm going to load up this weekend (they shouldn't have any difficulty penetrating paper targets ;-) I've only had a chance to shoot it at On Target's 25 yard range so far, but the rounds will easily punch holes touching each other with iron sights at that short range.

If you like tossing big chunks of lead with big booms, the 45/70 is the way to go.
