My mother would never have allowed me that because of the gun/phaser.

+1 for Major Matt Mason.. Remember the jet pack with the string that wound up inside of it?

That and my Caption Action with a Captain America costume were my favorites.

top of my head:

- Coating nickels and dimes with mercury.

- Potato gun (the ones you stuck into spud to load).

Oh wow, they still make them. But they were metal then, of course. Zapped the missile out pretty stoutly, not sure if you could put an eye out or not, maybe.

Bet they're pretty wimpy by comparison today.

- REAL cherry bombs and M-80s, the toilet cracking kind.

- Daisy pump BB gun (still have it)

- Playing root the peg (mumblety peg) with all kinds of knives

- Various sling shots, including home made ones

- Burning holes in stuff with magnifying glasses (I wasn't into killing insects, but know I must have done a few)

- War, Old Maid, Go Fish, Chutes and Ladders, Monopoly

- Marbles

- Full sized pot metal cowboy cap guns

etc...

- OS

We would save all the "dud" firecrackers and tear them in half. Light the end and they would be flame throwers against those sinister invading soldiers!

Bottle rocket wars

When we moved to Florida for a year, we discovered that dry chlorine for the pool and dot 4 class brake fluid is poor mans napalm. Put the dry chlorine in a baggy so it won't get hit by the brake fluid immediately, stuff it in a 2 liter bottle, pour in brake fluid. RUN LIKE HELL> That stuff burns hot and fast!

How did we survive?

We would take firecrackers and dump out the gunpowder into one of the small Testors model car paint bottles until it was full. I don't know how much that was or how it would compare to a stick of dynamite but those would sure make some noise and do some damage. I guess we were lucky no one was killed! Someone always called the Police every time we set one off.

You played with a rock and some twine Mike. Anything else was obscure.

Oh, that reminds me. Sewing thread tied to a big June Bug was a great model airplane!

Of course that's kind of obscure for someone from Cincy.

you forgot sticks and mudballs :)

and of course there was Mr. Smith's trashpile back near the edge of the woods. He seperated glass, aerosal cans and burnable stuff. Dunno how the glass always ended broken and the cans ended up in the burn barrel ;)

My favorite part of the Matt Mason collection was the Space Plane! That and the Crawler. You can still find them on Ebay if you have the dough!

Here's the Major himself!

They had a crawler last time I checked in 09 but none right now.

I did find a few websites and this one had the best info. The pic linked shows a lot of the toys in one scene, the uni tread tractor, the crawler, the space sled, and the moonbase station. The station was cool because the beacon was actually a flashlight!

Yeah, I loved that set up. If I was brave I would go find the pictures of me in my snoopy PJ top and tighty whitety's playing with it Christmas day 1967 or 68.

Can't remember the name but it was a sit down riding toy, like sitting in a hard plastic innertube with two big wheels on either side, you could spin, go any direction and crash like hell into your brother and try to knock him off his Big Wheel.!!

That was the "Big Green Machine" aka Big wheel on steroids. I loved mine!!!!!

Mine in bold.

Am I the only one old enough to have had real cap guns? The kind that I wore hanging way down on my hip :cool:in that quick draw holster and fired rolls of caps one at a time. The rolls of caps that I placed on a flat rock or other hard object and hit the whole roll with a hammer. Now those were exciting times.:(

I used to take a whole roll of the cap gun 'caps' and hit them with a big hammer, no wonder my ears ring all the time today.

Ahhh, real M-80's... Used to take them and tie rocks to them and toss them into the river. They stunned some big catfish and every now and then a few would float up. (waterproof fuses were cool)

Using a cigarette fuse on them at school and then returning to the class, sitting there like an angel, when a locker just seem to explode in the hallway. My G-d, today's kids get expelled for thinking of things like that!

They still had those when I was little. Got a little box with 4-5 rolls of red paper caps, you had to very carefully separate the rolls to load your set of cowboy revolvers otherwise they'd unravel on ya. i also had the newer version...it was an Uzi, all black plastic, no orange barrel(aka pre-ban, haha), and it took the newer plastic strip caps. They looked like little cups linked together. They fed in the back and the mag stored your extras. I've probably still got it somewhere.

Some of the natural born idiots didn't. Now, we protect them so they can grow up and run for Congress.

No, this thing was yellow, the wheels were red and it looked like a bumper car. I got to find this now and post a picture.

I loved the Big Wheel, rock fights, mudball fights and my favorite was the wrist radio (don't remember if it was Buck Rogers or Space 1999). I remember the first song that I heard on it was BETH by KISS. Been a Peter Criss fan every since.

That's a cool jet-pack, but mine was silver with a spiral front that spun around as the string was pulled through it.

Great stuff! Just think how much all those toys would be worth if you had them all today... I did manage to hang on to most of my comic books from that era - I figure they will be a good addition to the college fund for my kids when the time comes.

How about banana bikes? Anybody else have one?

One speed, friction brakes, and ape-hanger handlebars.. I probably put hundreds of miles on one that cost $26 brand new.

Posted

Yep, I had the Sears version of the banana seat bike. We then took old bikes, cut the front forks off them and hammered them on the front of our bikes to have choppers! Even had the flat racing slick rear tire. Loved that bike. Memories. sigh

Posted

yep, even an old fart like me had a bike with a banana seat. Also had a sissy bar, cheater slick tires and we also did the front fork trick to make them look like a chopper.

Mine was stolen :(

Had near a whole summer that year without a bike.
