Help on Painting a Car

Recommended Posts

I hope we might have some painting experts here that can give me some advice. I've been working a repainting the roof of my truck using laquer. I sanded, primed, wet-sanded, painted, wet-sanded some more, and now after several coats have the paint where it needs to be. I'm ready to add a couple of coats of laquer clear coat, but before I do that do I need to hit the new paint with rubbing compound? If not, do i need to use compound after the clear coats, or are they OK to just wax after a couple of weeks?? Finally, do I need to wet sand between the clear coats?

Thanks for any help I can get!

why laquer? if it is a new say 1976 or newer it should have a base coat clear coat finish. which would need verry little work after the clear was applyed. as with the laquer i would wet sand with 2000 grit before i applyed the clear, then put on 3 to 4 medium coats of clear, wait about 24 to 48 hours then buff with a medium speed buffer with a micro polishing compound. hope this helps.:)

are you using a rattle can? or a spray gun? if you are using off the shelf spray can paint (rattle can ). they make a clear but it has to be put on wet (almost to the point of running) to get a good shine but it wont last long. no offense but the Duplicolor can stuff is for cars you want to sell within a few weeks. it will stop rust tho. i thought you were using a compressor and spray gun.:P
