Cool new plinker

After much urging from my almost 17 yrs old son, who is going off to the Marines next summer, I decided to get a new rifle for plinking. He wanted something tacticool and fun to shoot. I wanted to hold out until I could afford an AR-15, but the S&W M&P 15-22 seemed like a smart alternative. All-in-all I think it's a great compromise. It's being marketed as an inexpensive training rifle, so maybe it will give him more confidence when he gets his hands on the real thing.

I got a fairly good deal on the rifle, a carry bag, and a couple of extra mags at the gun show last weekend and went straight to the range after a quick cleaning. We ran about 250 rounds of Walmart brick ammo through it without a single FTF or FTE.

I've got a cheapo red dot, riser mount, and vertical grip on the way, so I'll post more pics later. Enjoy the gun porn, guys!

Nice rifle. The best thing your son can do in order to be a proficient rifleman in the Corps is to forget everything he thinks he knows about shooting, and to let the Marksmanship Instructors do their job. Alot of people go in thinking they know how to shoot and don't do so well. They will take care of him. A word of advice, send him off sometime in the fall, this way he avoids the dreaded sand fleas. Forget water boarding, if you want to torture someone stick them on Parris Island in July in a pit of sand fleas.

I decided to go with a 3-9X40 NcStar scope on a 1" Leapers riser with a Leapers vertical foregrip.

don't let him use the red dot

I agree. I suggest no optics at all until he can riddle a coke can at 50 yards with just the open sights. My humble opinion sir, do what you think is best.

More importantly, I thank you and your son for the service to our country. That is what really matters.

What ammo does it like and, what ammo doesn't it like? I just picked one up used. Haven't had time to plink yet.

Sorry, I haven't checked this thread in a while. I'm sure you already found some ammo that works well by now.

It would be nice to compare notes, though. I mostly shot cheap Federal brick ammo w/ no issues, but get best groups so far w/ CCI Mini-Mags. How 'bout you??
