Don't you think a chat room would be good just to be able to watch stuff on TV and talk about it real time? Like R.Lee on now at History channel.:)

It was a nice add on when this board had it.

It did not get used a lot by a lot of people, but it was used a lot by a few of us.

I would like to see it come back.

Not a whole lot of people used it when we had it, and IIRC it ate up a lot of bandwidth.

Sorry... probably not a feature I'll be adding back in. It wasn't a bandwidth hog but it did open several security holes, which couldn't be ignored.

I figured there was a good reason why we don't have it anymore.

I am sure there are places where chat rooms can be made and accessed by anyone who is interested.

Everyone interested should just use Yahoo or MSN Messenger and chat away. Some friends and I did that on another forum and it worked very well.

that is one on one, is it not? Would be nice to have a room for a bunch of miscreants to talk trash

We have had 5 or 6 at a time on there. The one who "Hosts" the conversation has the option to invite more into it.

I would suggest using Skype. It's free as long as you do PC to PC. PC to moble is charged. It's probably the one of, if not the largest, global chat programs. It's usually got around 20 million people online most of the time. In a group chat you can pull in 200 people. We use it at work to "talk" between others in our department. You can do video calls as well. A lot of folks use it for overseas communications. Seeing and talking to your loved one half way around the world is really nice and free!

There any reason we couldn't designate/start a channel on one of the existing IRC networks?

Edit: Or use tinychat

I set up a simple chat room anyone can use.

I have not fully set it up or looked into all the ins and outs on it yet.

It is free to be used now.

If it is used Ill be glad to work on it more and add or remove what you guys feels it needs.

On a similar note... I have been looking at a chat module that mimics Facebook's where you can talk with people in your buddies list. And then I started seeing reviews of it elsewhere and the forum admins were saying it was axe-murdering the performance of their servers.

On my car forum I started the No Topic thread so that members can get on there and chat away without someone getting their panties in a wad over getting off topic. That thread is still going strong at 4,789 pages, 95,776 replies, and 725,752 views currently.
