Mayor Daley Charges After Control

we should get 'Real Reporter' to ask the Aldermen how they would feel about losing some other rights, like freedom of speech or perhaps 13th or 19th Amendment's. They had to have the 2nd Amendment before they got to those.

Update:

AFP: Chicago hits back at Supreme Court limit on gun control

CHICAGO — The city of Chicago struck back Friday at a Supreme Court ruling severely limiting gun control measures, voting for a tough new ordinance that prohibits people from taking handguns outside their homes.

Mayor Richard Daley noted that previous court rulings applied only to a citizen's right to keep a gun in their home for self-defense and found that some restrictions were constitutional.

"In rewriting our ordinance we have abided by the court's previous guidance," Daley said at a press conference Thursday ahead of Friday's city council vote.

"We are a country of laws. We should never be a country of guns."

On Friday, the city council voted 45-0 in favor of the new law, which requires all firearms to be broken down into a "non-functioning state" if taken outside a licensed owner's home or business.

The highly restrictive ordinance includes hefty fines and jail time for those caught violating it, and bans gun sales and shooting ranges in the city.

It also prohibits all gun owners from keeping more than one "operable" gun in their home and requires anyone who has "reason to believe" that a child could gain access to the gun to keep it locked up.

"As long as I'm mayor, we will never give up or give in to the gun violence that continues to threaten every part of our nation, including Chicago," Daley said.

"I believe that enacting a new handgun law is the responsible step for us to take and the right thing to do. Without it, I fear for that there will be greater violence on our streets and in our homes."

The US Supreme Court on Monday found Chicago's handgun ban to be unconstitutional in a far-reaching ruling that makes it much harder for states and city governments to limit gun ownership.

In a major victory for gun rights activists, but a bitter blow for those seeking to maintain gun controls in the United States, Justice Samuel Alito said the US Constitution was clear on the right to bear arms for self-defense.

The 5-4 majority ruling extended to all cities and states the Supreme Court's 2008 landmark affirmation that Americans have the constitutional right -- as enshrined in the Second Amendment -- to own weapons, including handguns.

Gun control advocates responded by immediately slamming the court's move, pointing to statistics that show an average 30,000 deaths -- including some 12,000 murders -- by shooting each year in the United States, where some estimate there are 200 million guns in circulation.

Umm, if we are a country of laws and not guns (not that these two are mutually exclusive), then why do the cops carry them? Should these laws stop the criminals if this were the case?

Additionally, doesn't this violate the Heller ruling and the 1986 firearm owners protection act?

USC Title 18,926A.

Notwithstanding any other provision of any law or any rule or regulation of a State or any political subdivision thereof, any person who is not otherwise prohibited by this chapter from transporting, shipping, or receiving a firearm shall be entitled to transport a firearm for any lawful purpose from any place where he may lawfully possess and carry such firearm to any other place where he may lawfully possess and carry such firearm if, during such transportation the firearm is unloaded, and neither the firearm nor any ammunition being transported is readily accessible or is directly accessible from the passenger compartment of such transporting vehicle: Provided, That in the case of a vehicle without a compartment separate from the driver’s compartment the firearm or ammunition shall be contained in a locked container other than the glove compartment or console.

So, if it is legal to own an "operable" firearm in your garage, then load it in your car, and then drive outside the city limits. Wouldn't they be violating federal law by arresting you for having an operable firearm in your car?

"Chicago Machine"

Daley knew this would happen. His machine had this planned out

for some time. Wait until the real corruption starts. Daley is just getting started. The

challenges will take place and the machine will counteract. The one good thing is when

people like Daley gets angry, he screws up. There will be a lot of folks watching him.

Besides, he may be retiring soon. That means a power vacuum in Chicago, soon.

It will be interesting watching the Windy city the next few years.

actually I am suprised that they are allowing people to own more than one handgun. Daley must be loosening up some.

Without it, I fear for that there will be greater violence on our streets and in our homes."

how is that even possible?

This is not over, there will be more lawsuits.

"Operable" = Constitutionally vague. What makes a firearm "inoperatble"? Removing the magazine? Field stripping? Dismantling and locking pieces to separate boxes? And they haven't started with California-style ammunition restrictions yet...

Daley's ideas are just rediculus. I read a figure that you are 20 times more likely to be shot and killed in Washington D.C. than you are in Iraq. So the safer place isn't in a U.S. city with a gun ban, it's in the theatre of war where there are islamic extremists with AK-47's. When are these idiots going to get the message that gun control only limits guns in the hands of citizens, the criminals don't care! Not to mention the most important fact that the RIGHT TO BEAR ARMS MAY NOT BE INFRINGED!!! People like Daley aren't patriots, they are scum and won't be around too much longer if Obama and his left wing socialists keep up what they're doing.

Aside from Healthcare....

Oil spill - Obama has let this drag on intentionally so that it creates a disaster. He wants a disaster so he can push through his cap and trade bill further throwing our economy in the crapper. More control, more taxes. Interesting that his speech about fixing the spill the other week was totally focused on how we need a new energy policy and how we need to get away from foreign dependence on oil...excuse me Obama, wasn't this speech suppossed to be about how we are going to fix the gush of oil in the gulf? Also, a topic that I think only Fox news broadcasted was the goverment's recent push for a ban on drilling, which will force rigs to close and be sold to Brazil. How is this going to help us not buy oil from foreign countries? Oh, maybe it's because his senior advisor owns a 900 million dollar stake in a Brazilian oil company.....hmmm makes you wonder. Oh, and BP just happend to give the biggest campaign donation ever to a presidential candidate to...guess who...Osama. Wonder who is on who's side here.

Immigration- Instead of securing the borders, lets implement a national ID card or social security card to all citizens. This card will have an rfid chip and biometric information on it. Ok, so how does that help? How are you going to make sure the illegals that you already can't find are going to not get one? More oppression of the masses to promote the minority. A minority that deserves no legal rights in the first place.
