New Navy Rules for Personal Firearms

Week of June 28, 2010

"The Navy has announced a policy change regarding personal firearms. One highlight of the new policy is the ability for all Sailors to store their personal firearms in base housing or armories (when space is available), as long as they receive prior written approval from the installation commanding officer. Weapons must be stored in a locked container, a locked gun rack, or secured with approved trigger locks to keep the weapon from firing. Weapons are still prohibited in other on-base locations. The policy also clarifies that Sailors must comply with all federal, state, and local laws, and that concealed weapons are never allowed on Navy installations, regardless of local law. Am I correct in that the "new" part is that they can also store them in the housing area now? As long as they are stored securely, is that right?

Mostly. Some base commanders allowed them in housing and some didn't. Now they all have to allow them in housing, as long as they are secured. Looks like the Navy saw the new SCOTUS decision coming and reacted. The Marine bases I served on allowed personal weapons in housing (secured) and transortation to and from range (cased) but some of the Navy bases I served on didn't allow personal weapons period.

Same with the Air Force. Has been in effect for years. As long as you submitted the paperwork and got approval, you could possess and store firearms in base housing. Otherwise they had to be kept in the armory. I always just lived off base... problem solved.

Hey if you can't trust the armed forced with weapons, who can you trust?

Lets see, it takes 1 or 2 bad apples to do something dumb, and policy keeps 10,000 disarmed that are well trainned to handle it.

Back in the early 80's, I was stationed in Jacksonville, Florida (living in base housing) and the only thing I had to do to keep my guns with me is to submit the serial numbers and make/caliber to the armory officer. Just about all of my neihbors had some sort of firearm in their house and there was never an incident.
