Looking at a 1980's S&W 686

I'm looking to purchase a S&W 686 (no dash) 357 mag revolver, 6 inch barrel. The first three digits of the serial number are AHY. That puts the gun somewhere between 1980 and 1986. The gun has only slight rings around the cylinder with no other scratches. The owner wants $550. Is this a reasonable price? My other choice would be a new Ruger GP100 stainless 6 inch online for about $520.

Thanks.

More than the rings around the cylinder, I'd be interested in how well the cylinder locks up. When you go back to look at it, there are some tests you could do to see how well the lockwork's still engaging.

Here's a site that has a good rundown of what to look for, and how to look for it.

Another thing to look at specifically on S&W revolvers: Look at the screw heads on the right side of the gun back near the grip. If they look boogered up, that generally means that somebody was in there that probably didn't have any business messing around in it.

$550's a pretty good price. The GP100's a tad high. The Ruger'll be a stronger revolver, but the trigger on the S&W will be much better.

I have a 686 (no dash) w/4" bbl I bought new in Feb. '86. S/N AJMxxxx. Paid $347 for it. Glad to know it's gone up in value but no, I wouldn't part with it.

The 686 is a fine handgun, $550 is a reasonalbe price IF it passes the used revolver inspection. Chuck Hawks wrote and article on how to inspect a used handgun. You can google it and find it pretty easily.

I have a 686 with 4" barrel and ADF serial prefix. It has been a great pistol I have carried for years and shot it in service gun competition. $550 is a reasonable price if the cylinder locks up with the trigger held to the rear (dropped hammer). If you have access to a timing rod, I'd also check timing of each chamber.

I traded for a 686 4" a few years ago and I love it. It was made in '84. It was stolen from me in late '06 but recovered and returned to me on the Spring of '08. I was so happy to get it back. It was missing the rear sight but other than that it was fine. I love shooting that gun!
