"Survival" Books

I'd make sure you also bought ones with color pictures. Some descriptions are pretty close between edible/poisonous and being able to visualize the two in the moment could make all the difference.... I'm guessing everyone on here has seen, "Into the Wild."

Good point.

The three I mentioned have color pictures. And while I haven't seen the movie, I have read the book and had the pleasure of climbing a few times with the author (Jon Krakauer) in Colorado in the early 80's.

I'd check out "The Big Book of Country Wisdom." A lot of good stuff there.

Probably the past year whenever I've gone to the book stores there's been a big increase in books related to self sufficiency. I've seen them in the history section, nature section, gardening section, crafts section, etc. You might care to start looking at books related to plants located in your region to find out which are good, which are bad, which have medicinal value, etc. In todays society of prepackaged everything the skills our grandparents took for granted and used on a daily basis have not been passed along. Things do get that bad the learning curve for the most basic of tasks is gonna be REAL steep for a lot of folks.

I had a co-workers brother that downloaded the cookbook off of a file sharing site(for research purposes) and was literally contacted by the FBI and basically told to delete it.

Yikes....note to self.

Also thanks to all for the ideas....

The SAS Survival Guide is a good read. I'm also enjoying Cody Lundin's "When All Hell Breaks Loose-Stuff You Need to Survive When Disaster Strikes" It is geared toward urban survival in the wake of some sort of SHTF scenario.

The Encyclopedia of Country Living by Carla Emery, pretty much has it all (think Foxfire to the 100th power)

Fiction:

-Lucifers Hammer, Niven and Pournelle (i understand a sequel is in the works)

-Lights Out, David Crawford

-000/Patriots (search the web or google archive for a free copy) (kinda preachy and a bit dated, but a good read for a n00bie)

- When Autumn Leaves Fall, cant rem the author, another freebie on the web

- Alas Babylon

- One Second After (DAM# depressing, but accurate imo)

- The Road, McCarthy

- The "Old Bear" short stories on the web (never learned the guys real name; he's dead now)
