Tennessee Constable

Being in Shelby County, I'm not very familiar with constables. I was in a class last week and both the instructors were LEOs from out in east Tennessee. They told a couple of stories about constables up that way and it seemed the overall opinion of constables is pretty low among other LEOs. At least that's what I gathered from the way they talked. I've worked in another county that still had Constables and some were ok and others were well idiots. Best thing to do is read up TCA on constables on michie, then if elected I would make yourself known to your county sheriff. But as far as I can remember they serve any papers or arrest warrants like they were a County Deputy. They get paid per service or arrest.

If you get elected and have no prior law enforcement experience I would do more than just the constable training, really read up on laws and try to get as much LEO training as possible so you don't find yourself in tough spot that can come back to bite you.

My father in law is a Dickson County Constable.

A constable is the only person that can serve papers on a high sheriff and an elected judge. like someone said some are good some are bad ,just like any other elected official.

IMO the office of Constable is an outdated position. It serves no use today. Before the HCP was available in TN, people ran for Constable so they could carry a handgun. And they were usually Police/Sheriff wannabes. The ones in my county just wanted to try and impress people with their "powers of office". YMMV.

I have to agree. Looks like many counties have already abolished the position of constable. I just spent a little while looking through TCA and have to say that there is no way in hades I'd consider being a constable. In today's sue-happy world, you're almost begging to be taken to the cleaners if you mess up in even the slightest way. The training, from what I've seen, is a 40 hour in-service which includes 8 hours of firearms. That is nowhere near the amount of training someone should have (nowadays) to be an LEO. Even in the small town departments where they have reserve officers with minimal training, they usually get to ride with an experienced officer for a good while before going out and flying solo. If you were to do it, I'd strongly suggest sticking to the required duties of the position and nothing more unless absolutely necessary. My 2 cents. Best of luck.

There are constables all over Arkansas that are elected in parts of every county. It is a total joke elected position back home. They do not get paid...are not required to have any training...but can carry a weapon (again with zero training) anywhere they want...arrest..all that sort of stuff just like a deputy sheriff. Most constables that do get elected are former/retired LEO's don't actually play police...they just hold the position to keep some ding dong from getting elected who actually wants to play police...that's when it gets wild when one of those guys gets elected! There was a guy in northern Arkansas who was a constable who put lights on his own car....tried to stop people...all sorts of silly garbage...made some folks mad for playing police....hopefully he still doesn't have that position b/c he was riding quite a high horse...quite a loose cannon with little or no training.

I do know reserves with Washington County (Fayetteville/Springdale Arkansas) had to do 100 hours of training to become certified LEO's for the sheriff....while the dummy constable running wild had ZERO.

TN just raised the minimum requirement for police/sheriff reserves from 40 hours to 80 hours of training, from what I've heard. Most places still do way more than that and require reserves to ride with experienced officers. I know that if you go to Memphis, Shelby Co, or Bartlett's reserve program, you do the same 500 to 600 hours that full timers do, you just don't get the POST certification.

Perhaps. That is why I assume the General Assembly removed the requirement for each county to have them and why some no counties longer do.

So if a county does still have them, one could assume they serve some purpose in that county....otherwise that county does have the ability to get rid of them.

Thanks for the information fellas. From what I hear we have good and bad Constables here. I work 40 hours a week, go to school part time, and am married with two boys. Im just looking to deliver papers. I might try the reserve Deputy route if I get the time. I have had my HCP since 1999, and have attended some street survival training at Range USA in Memphis. Nothing close to what I need but a start. Just looking to follow the laws and have a part time job.
