However, in a stroke of engineering genius, FN has developed the common receiver which essentially makes the Mk 16 and Mk 17 the single, modular weapon envisioned in the original requirements document. With the advent of this common receiver, essentially every rifle has a Mk 17 receiver, and with the addition of a new barrel and receiver insert, the rifle can be converted to a Mk 16. This may be one of the main sticking points on how many weapons and type are actually fielded.

I read it was something like 75 to 80% interchangeable parts between platforms. With the ability to do Battlefield "Pick-up" only requiring a minimum of additional parts. If your weapon fails you can pick up what ever is available without having a learning curve between weapons.

6 different weapons based on the same design. With barrels and magazines the ability to switch calibers would be limited by length of shell case. I would not expect to fire a 50 BMG through a SCAR or even a 300 WIN MAG but maybe the later would not be above consideration.

FYI:

I sold both of my SCAR 16s before even firing them and am waiting for a 17 to be available because 308 is a better round than 223 for SHTF. I did get an opportunity to shoot a 16 recently, nice weapon but I want the 17.

Yea but you can't convert the Scar-L into the Scar-H, which is the one they want.

I hope this makes FN offer them to the civi market at better pricing. I really like my SCAR 16. It is the best AR(ish) rifle I own. I would love to have a SCAR 17. That would make a nice set.

What I like about the SCAR is that it seems they have taken the best ideas from the AR, AK, and FAL and combined them all into one gun.

My local "Pusher" says the middle of July is the current ETA for the 17.

As far as converting and comparability between model parts, I am only repeating what I read. That was what lead me to purchase the 16 originally. I think the lack of a longer barrel within the next year will lead me to use a lighter round for short distance and my SASS for longer range applications. My STG556 is lighter and shorter with an 18 inch barrel and I just picked up an FS2000 because it has a rail front end for Goodies such as bipod. Those should cover the light work.

I was reading the article and all it said was the Mk17 uses the 7.62 could they mean the 7.62x39 because the Mk17 is made in that cal. same size lower and mags.

For battle purposes they wanted the abillty to do pick-up and be able to swap out minimal parts to use what ever was laying around. I could not find that as a civilian option either. Also the longer barrels are hard to come by.

I doubt it. Just like the claimed longer barrels that I have been waiting for from MSAR. They might be available for military and with the cancellation they might become available.

the barrel assemblies are made in belgium and can not be imported under our laws, so until the manufacture them here you wont be able to buy them, the gun is made over seas as a single shot then shipped here to fnh usa and is converted on the lower and made 922 r compliant then sold to the public. atleast thats what i have been told in my research.

They Hyped them as short, standard and long barreled and that was on of the selling points that lead me to pick-up 2. When the barrels were non existent I sold both. I am waiting for the 17 as I want something in 7.62 NATO semi auto.
