Anyone here an expert on Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 ??

Or know of any good forums?

I was formatting and setting up my dual boot laptop (XP corporate Pro/98SE) when I saw that MS is giving Virtual PC 2007 away free. I have a CAD\CAM system that only runs in 98SE so I thought I would try that instead of a dual boot system.

I installed XP,VPC 2007, and installed 98SE in a virtual machine.

I have hosed the install 3 times trying to get my video drivers to work in 98. I have a Toshiba laptop that uses “NVIDIA Gforce4 420 GO (Toshiba)†drivers in XP. I have a set of drivers that work fine in 98 when I was dual booting. But when I try to install them in a virtual machine I get an error message that says “Was unable to locate any NVIDIA graphic chips on this system. The installation will be terminated.â€

After that I can’t even uninstall them though the control panel.

It doesn’t appear that MS has any support for VPC 2007. Maybe because it’s free??

Before I have to buy VMware, :D I thought I might see if any one could point me in the right direction.

TIA.

I am defininatley not an expert, but I take it that your hardware is compatible for this?

Well… I’m not sure what you mean, but I was running both XP and 98SE on this system in a dual boot configuration. I installed the video driver in 98SE and didn’t get a message that it was unable to locate any NVIDIA graphic chips.

Yes, I’ve been there. When you click on “Find help, get answers See answers to common questions about Virtual PC 2007.†And then click on “Search the Support Knowledge Base (KB)â€.

You get “The Requested Web Page is Not Availableâ€. :D

First, the video driver in the guest OS has to be able to support the virtual machine that you create. So its the other way around in reverse. If the VM cannot replicate an invidia card like you have, you are out of luck.

I don't think anyone is an expert in hypervisors. vmware server is a free download. I believe it to be a superior product to what microsoft has put out. I've used that and vmware workstation extensively to develop code with multiple threads of control in the past and for computer security coursework in the present.

As a footnote, i've used several systems for playing counterstrike and/or UT2k4 in linux using ported directx software. Anything visual like cad/cam stuff running on a VM, you're going to take a pretty severe performance hit even if you get it going. Like it'll maybe run about 25% as fast as it did on the native hardware.

VMware has a free version. I have found it to be much more useful than VPC 2007.

I'll post the link when I find it.

EDIT: Nevermind, link posted above.

the link is to the minimum HW requirements...

Dual booting is not the same as emulating an OS...you are running one at a time when dual booting...

the other guys responding are probably a better help...good luck!!

Can I use the free version of VMWare Server on a stand alone desktop? I guess I’m not clear on the difference between VMWare server and VMWare Workstation.

I used an old version of VMWare Workstation a long time ago. I think I quit because it couldn’t transfer files between the Host and Guest. Can the free app do that now?
