NO NO NO! Cold Steel Recon 1

I recently ordered 2 of the Recon 1 that were on sale and I'm not impressed.

The locks are so tight on both that I almost have a blister from trying to unlock them.

At one point, one of the knives got stuck open for a while until I beat it for a few minutes. They finally feel like they are getting better but I still think they have a horrible locking mechanism. Did anyone else have this problem?

Also, the lack of jimping on the back of the blade is a downside in my opinion. Another negative I noticed is the pocket clip is so stiff it's almost unusable.

You can adjust the locks, that's why they have screw slots.

Did you expect jimping, when it's not mentioned and the pictures don't show it?

The round opening lug doubles as a pretty good thumb rest.

I don't use pocket clips, so that wasn't an issue for me.

This model was produced for a number of years, and most folks loved it.

Of course it is being discontinued for a new version; so is the even more popular Voyager.

No, it was my fault for not checking, it was a complete impulse buy, I guess I just expected jimping since it's such a common feature(and an important one IMHO). After trying the opening lug, you are correct, it works pretty well.

I've always been happy with Cold Steel knives. I'm even happier with the changes made to the 2010 Recon 1, the clip placement is just one of them. I haven't had any issue with the stiffness of the clip. I've lost a few knives because the clips aren't stiff enough, but because of the clips Cold Steel uses and the texture of the handle, I've never lost one.

What kind of blade did you get? If you decide to sell them, I may be interested.

I'm going to keep one, but I'll sell the other if you're interested. It's a clip point 1/2 serration

For me, it's a matter of trade-offs. Yeah, the clip is tight. It's a pain to get into the pocket, but it's a breeze coming out (for me, anyway). The locking mechanism is REALLY positive. I haven't had any failures yet, however. The lack of jimping never bothered me, honestly. Plus, the blade is heavy enough for me to open it using only the blade's inertia. I'll train with it for a couple more weeks before I consider replacing my Blur, but it's promising.
