At the end of WWI Germany was bankrupt. One thing they did have a lot of were surplus Gew98 infantry rifles. One way to raise much needed capital was to convert the infantry rifles to bolt action shot guns and export them to their former enemies. 14, 16 and 20 gauge are most common, but they also made many in 12 gauge. They were extremely functional and very inexpensive. I've seen quite a few of these over the years. They are by no means rare and are more of a historical curiosity than a valuable collectible.

A buddy and I got a couple of them moons ago and reworked them. Cut the barrels off, put sights, bayonet lugs on them and restocked them in 98K stocks.

They look like military issue 98's now. Good fun shooters.

Dont know much about them other than they hold a tight pattern. I know this from growing up with one in the house. My Dad had one, now in my gun cab.
