Actually, guns are designed to poke holes in things from a distance.

It just so happens that most living things don't survive very long with extra holes made in 'em.

So they're like a really sophisticated punch? :( You can even adjust the size and depth of the hole with different boolits.

Denying the facts doesn't make them less true.

Only when dealing with facts. Making a blanket statement that all guns are designed to kill is an opinion. I have a different opinion.

Am I the only one here who's used a gun instead of a drill, for certain chores? Like putting drain holes in the bottom of the fire pan for one of those outdoor fireplace things?

( The drill would'a taken way too long even after I went and got it, and the pistol was already there in my pocket... )

And you are of course entitled to your opinion. In my opinion you're arguing semantics. :D

If you really want to argue semantics, a gun is just designed to accelerate a small piece of metal to high velocities. :D

And no I haven't used a gun for a hole punch, not that it wouldn't occur to me to do so. :)

... for the purpose of making a hole in something, as a rule.

( There are shotguns that are used to bust dried concrete out of huge mixing vats. Their purpose isn't to make a hole in the vat, just the concrete. )

And no I haven't used a gun for a hole punch, not that it wouldn't occur to me to do so. :)

Then you can clearly see where the intent is for making a hole... one that hopefully doesn't prove "fatal" to whatever it is you think needs a hole in it. :D

Another story of how people change their minds about these things.

Several years ago when my son started High School, he came home talking about a fight or two that happened at school. My wife made a statement that there was NEVER an excuse for fighting at school. I informed her that there were indeed times when there was a time to fight. After the argument was over we agreed to disagree.

A year later, she started working at the High School as a Paraprofessional. It didn't take long for her to realize that she had been wrong in believing that there was no excuse for fighting. She witnessed several times "the real World" out there and told me of several fights that were indeed justified.

Also, since our house had an attempted break in a month ago on a Sunday afternoon at 3:30 PM in broad daylight, she now keeps a .32 pistol handy all the time now too. Our neighbors chased them off.

Actually if we allowed more arguments to be settled by a simple fight we would likely have less school shootings.

Or fatal to something that might not have needed a hole punched in it. :screwy:

To your point that is the general use although at times guns aren't used for that purpose. Sometimes the hole punching is incidental. Firing into the air in celebration as is customary in some arab cultures. The hole in the ground is incidental as the noise of the firing is more the purpose than the hole punching.

, she often asked where did i think i was alloted the power to decide if a criminal should live or die and has stated that it was all up to our justice system to make that decision.

I think with antis, its very important for you to convey to them that you are NOT going out in the world shooting bad guys and taking justice into your own hand. A gun is simply a self defense tool, and that you would only use it if you would die otherwise. You are not making the decision that some bad guy should die, some bad guy made the decision that you should die, and you just disagree and will do what you have to do to prevent that!

As a female, I think I have a bit of an easier time explaining my stance to people. My mom especially was VERY anti gun (started crying the first time i told her i shot a 22, bout fainted when she found out i got my permit, and ran out of the house screaming and didnt come back for 2 hrs when she heard that i had a gun in the house (unloaded and locked up)). I simply asked her if she would rather find me beaten, raped, and murdered, or if she would rather that I defended myself. It took a very long time, but eventually my mom got more and more used to the fact. Also be sure to emphasis your training and safety skills. That was my dads concern. He had no moral problem with me shooting a rapist by any means, but as many uneducated people, he was afraid of guns jumping off table and shooting people, or was afraid I might pull a gun on someone that might not have shot me, me miss, and then him shoot me, etc. When my parents saw the great amount of time I spent shooting guns, training, teaching others about safety, etc.. they got a lot better about it.

Also, dont push the issue too hard. It takes time, and some people will just never change. Take it slow with them. Try and get them out to the range just for fun and to teach them gun safety. Whether people want to shoot/have a gun or not, it is important for them to know gun safety and how to properly handle a gun. This is a great reason to get them to go to the range. Show them how safe you are with a gun and dont show off, that will go a long way.

When i was a kid, we always used a shotgun to disconnect our Christmas tree from the ground. Usually took a couple of rounds.
