Vacation Recommendations near Douglas Lake

We (my wife and 2 teens) are from PA, and we're trying to set up a vacation at some place near Douglas Lake - well - we're looking at NE TN, but Douglas Lake (specifically Sevierville) seems to be the place that keeps popping up. Anyway, there are many nice places that are very expensive, and I'm thinking our googling is landing us in the touristy spots. We're shooting to stay not too much over 100/night, and those are all hotel chains.

Any ideas for a good vacation spot in that area? We want to basically check out the area as a potential place to live in a few years, and of course enjoy the scenery at the same time. This would be 3 or 4 nights.

What do you like to do... boating, hiking, swimming...?

While Douglas Lake is a nice area (as is Cherokee Lake, just to the north) I'm not sure you'll find much other than the usual hotels and such. Perhaps some cabin rentals here and there.

You'll find tons of stuff in and around Sevierville and Gatlinburg. There's also Boone Lake near Johnson City and South Holston Lake near Bristol.

look for cabin rentals in the area you are going to be around. They are really not higher dollar than some hotels. They can easily be found by doing a google search.

If you are still uncertain about the vacation destination the Great Smoky Mtns is apretty good place to go.
