Ruger 10/22 Stainless Finish Peeled Off(NEED OPINIONS)

Recommended Posts

Hey fellas, dont know if any of you have run into a problem with Rugers finish on their stainless 10/22.I went to clean it today for the first time since I bought it over a year ago,so I stripped it down past the stock, took the bolt, trigger assembly and charge handle out of the receiver and promptly soaked it with Hoppes NO 9,upon this I noticed the(what seemed to be a Duracoat finish) inside the receiver peeling. To make a long story short it was all peeling,so I stripped all the finish off, which was not very hard to do I might add.Well now I have what looks to be a real stainless finish on this rifle. Now I know that the receiver is actually a alloy,so what I am wondering is will it hurt to leave a finish off the metal. It actually looks really good after I polished it a bit with a 3M Scotchbrite pad.Let me know what you guys think(Will it hurt or not)I am guessing no.Pics follow

They use a really weak spray paint for the "stainless" finish on their rifles. I ended up spraying mine with stainless Norrell's Moly Resin. The receiver is just aluminum, so if you leave it like that it will oxidize over time.

So then it would look like a dull stainless,it wont actually effect the hardness of the metal although(asking)not stating.

Yes..what he said. All 10/22 22lr rifles have aluminum receivers and trigger guards...has always been that way. The should put a "no brake cleaner" warning on them as it eats the finish like a fat kid eats cake.

light coat of clear poly on the trigger guard and receiver will fix you up for a long time. Make sure to plug all the holes as the extra thickness from the poly will cause things to be too tight.

Trigger guards are no longer aluminum, but polymer, as of about 18 months ago or so. Actually, whole trigger group housing and the trigger itself are polymer now.

And yes, receivers have ALWAYS been aluminum, except for a number of years of the .22 magnum 10/22, where there were indeed steel.

By the way, the "blued" sprayed finish comes off too, and underneath is the same aluminum receiver you now see on your "stainless" model.

Geez...yeah I keep forgetting those trigger groups are polymer now. They are tight, but man it just doesn't feel right. You are right I have it on record of being February - March of 2008 when they started rolling the investment casting unit to Polimer.

I used Tal-strip on my 10-22 to get the paint off. It works really fast (2-3 min) and wet sanded with wd-40, 220 and 600 grit sandpaper. Then I polished the outer receiver with #2 soft metal polish on a drill mounted polishing wheel. I didn't want it super shiny so I didn't finish with the 1000 grit paper.

I also dyed my trigger guard and trigger black. Heat the water on a stove around 6 and it will dye really fast.

Added a Boyds Tacticool stock, ER Shaw barrel and R/T auto bolt and mag release.

That is absolutely the first time I ever heard of doing that, had no idea it was possible to surface dye polymer. What product can do that?

The trigger/housing on the current "blued" models are already black of course, the color molded in.

Liquid RIT clothes dye. Look on AR15.com and M4carbine.net. There are tutorials on how to DIY. Mostly P-mags and light colored AR furniture. You can also make stencils from electrical tape to make camo patterns.

Far out...thanks. Nice job.

Yeah, a lot of people strip the finish off their receivers. I stripped the barrel to and polished out all the machining marks. Looks great. I didn't use anything to finish the bare aluminum either. A lot of mixed opinions about whether or not you really need to... I figure if it oxidizes it'll give me a good excuse to buy a fancy TacSol receiver or something...

This is mine. I still have a lot of Tal Strip if anyone needs some.
