Wanted to add something most don't think about. You'll lose some hearing naturally. Heavy drinkers also lose a little, but that may something to be recovered. And some have medical conditions that cause auditory neuritis. Just remember loss comes from lots more than loud noises. THAT'S accumulative.

I personally use Peltor Comtac-II's... much better than your standard non-electric ear muff... Well worth the money, these are the same ones our military issues to troops who need to be able to shoot and communicate at the same time.

I finally had a chance to put my Peltor 7S ear protectors to use. They're good! I put them on when I APPROACH the range. When done shooting, I leave them on, in my car, until I drive far enough away so that my unprotected ears are safe.

I'd say that almost any model in the $20-$40 range will do just about the same (and reasonably decent) job...you can pay a LOT for some and I'm not suggesting they aren't worth it but unless you really want to spend more I think the price range above is sufficient for a good pair.

Just as an aside; these things come in very handy as a home defense tool and I keep a pair in my nightstand. You see, they will magnify little ambient sounds if you turn up the gain and provide you "hearing" that you would never get unassisted. This can be a big help in identifying the location of a bad guy in the dark who may be lurking around the next corner.

Further, if you do have to fire your weapon, the sound shock alone, which you are protected from, can be a defensive tool if you have hearing protection and your potential attacker doesn't.

I have Peltor Tac 6S's, and I've never liked them. Battery replacement is a pita, they crackle, and their NRR is pretty lame for indoor. I'm ordering 7S's as soon as I can, but if money is not object, get Pro Ears Mag Gold. At 33NRR, they are the highest rated electronics I know of, and I don't know of anyone who's had any kind of failure from them.

Your criticisms of the Peltors are exactly my criticisms. You can read my detailed comments on the 6S on Amazon. I also ended up with the 7S. They are absolutely perfect for me and my wife.

Glad I found this thread. I was about to start one asking for a good set of electronic ear muffs. I have the Peltor 6S tactical. I don't like them for a different reason than I have seen posted. I don't think they are comfortable. Are the 7s more comfortable?

Can't speak to the 7s, bu the Sport tac's are pretty comfortable. I've gone 6-7 hours without any problems.

I absolutely love these. They have none of the drawbacks of muffs (hot, uncomfortable, big, heavy ect. ) and yet have a better protection rating (26-31 db) than most muffs (24-25 db) and still allow easy conversation without electronics that could fail or the annoying echo. I tried them thinking they were a gimmick, but they are anything but.

Mav, I just got back from the range. I was there for two hours blazing away. I hardly knew I had the headphones on my head. They are excellent, in my opinion.

Pro-Ears, expensive but I only have one set of ears. I started with a set of Peltor Tac 6 and found them lacking enough protection.

The difference between Pro-Ears and Sordin compared to all the rest is something that has to be experienced to really understand it well. These dampen the sound without the electronics abruptly clipping on and off.

I own 2 sets of Pro Ears, they are well worth the money and extremely comfortable
