questions regarding Pocket knives

Recommended Posts

Sorry if I I am a bit off topic but the thread on Auto knives got me thinking. I normally carry a pocket Knife with me every where, never give it a second thought. Just a regular folding knife, like a buck, or a case in my pocket, sometimes a leatherman on my belt nothing auto about them.

At what point is a pocket knife illegal to carry in an area where there is one of those 14x6 posted signs.

"MISDEMEANOR. STATE LAW PRESCRIBES A MAXIMUM PENALTY OF ELEVEN (11) MONTHS AND TWENTY-NINE (29) DAYS AND A FINE NOT TO EXCEED TWO THOUSAND FIVE HUNDRED DOLLARS ($2,500) FOR CARRYING WEAPONS ON OR IN PUBLIC RECREATIONAL PROPERTY."

I guess those signs could apply to knives?

I think I read some place blades on pocket knives have to be less then a certain lenght to be legal?

I'm no legal eagle, but it's my understanding that as long as the knife is not "auto" (opening with only the manipulation of a mechanism not on the blade) and the blade is not over 4", you are fine. That being said, obviously there are some places (like a courthouse) where even pocketknives are prohibited.

I'm sure some of our more legal savvy friends will be along with exact wording and fancy things like that.

...

Federal weapons statute for carry in buildings states knives must be under 2.5" blade, but doubt if you'd do time for it . :)

I've carried a pocket knife everywhere since I was about 13. Schools included. When I went to get my license renewed a couple years ago I forgot to take the knife out of my pocket before I went in the courthouse. When I pulled it out at the metal detector the officer just told me not to keep it clipped on my pocket..

That wouldn't have happened in Knoxville.

Seems most of the signs designed to prohibit handguns actually says weapons instead.

But I agree with jtluttrell that a knife that has a blade under 4" and is not a "switchblade" is not a weapon per TN law anyway.
