I used to be a huge MLB fan. Dad worked for the Reds forever and we went to tons of games every year. When we got cable TV back in the 70's and I was pissed at the Reds for dismantling the Big Red Machine ( incidently the best baseball team EVER!) I adopted the Cubs through receiving WGN. When we lived in Chicagoland for 7 years we went to a lot of Cubs and Sox games as well as a few Brewers games too. I loved it.

Then the strikes came and went, and baseball really put me off. While in Boca Raton i did go to a few Marlin's games every year, but it was more like going to a bar, I did nto really care about watching the game. It was more about people watching and drinking beer with the guys.

I can't name more than a few players anymore, but oddly enough i find myself being drawn back into it. I have watched more ball games this year on TV than in the last 12 years added together. Heck i probably went ten of those years without watching a pitch on TV.

Anyway we gets the Reds on one of the cable channels and I think i am becoming a fan again. Might need to make a trip to Great American Ballpark this summer to see a game.

(and as a side note, my high school Alma Mater, Cincinnati Elder is playing for the state championship tomorrow afternoon. They beat Moeller 1-0 today in the semi finals. If we win tomorrow it will be the 13th state baseball title. At least one in every decade since the 1940's)

A coworker and I had this very exact conversation yesterday....MLB aint what it used to be....

For years, I watched EVERY televised pitch of the Braves....like you said....since the strikes and NON loyalty(free agents) came around...i have been DONE with baseball.

Maybe im burnt out (played t-ball through college), maybe the players arent as good, maybe the umpires SUCK....I dunno...I just dont care much about it anymore....

I gave up many years ago after the second strike.

Selig's refusal to overturn the call at first base to give the kid his legitimate perfect game is just more of the candy ass same ole.

My opinion on the best team, of the last 100 years:

76 Reds. I do not think it is even close.

Even with the unlimited payroll the Yankees have nowdays they cannot even put a team together like the Reds were that year, (75 too). Baseball has not been the same since money rules now and players are free to go wherever they want.

Exactly OS. Selig plays the " integity of the game " card. And of course after the 'roid era integrity in MLB is a joke. Griffey Jr being the exception of players of that era.

Yeah.

I mean, c'mon, it's true, honorable, provable that the kid threw a perfect game. Shouldn't the frigging undeniable TRUTH of the fact override the tradition of the "human error factor?".

Especially when MLB already DOES use some instant replay for foul pole calls and whatnot.

Hell, I think banning Pete Rose from Hall of Fame is just more of the same hypocrisy.

I grew up watching the Cubs on WGN and the Braves on TBS pretty much daily during baseball season. As I have grown older I have lost interest. I couldnt tell you the last time that I watched a game on TV. I still love baseball but for some reason i can make myself watch it anymore. Chattanooga has the AA Dodgers team the Lookouts and I love taking the kids to games but TV is a different story.

I felt sorry for Pete once. I feel he was getting screwed. Yeah he bet on the game, but he sure as hell did not tank any games. And his crimes were committed as a manager not a player. Even then he never bet against the Reds or shaved runs.

But..... But..... he was going to get a second chance, Mike Schmidt brokered a deal. All Pete had to do was admit he did it and express sorrow. He was going to be forgiven. The press conference was called, it was all set up. Pete took the podium and then..... He denied he did it one more time. I hope he never gets in. ( this being said from a guy who adored Pete when I was a kid. We used to see him all the time in the neighborhood. He was great. Would take time to sign autographs for us, toss a ball around while his car was getting washed. I even got to touch his batting title trophy, a silver bat. Grew up loving the guy.)

i figure they may let him in after he dies. I don't care anymore, he is pretty much a jerk.

Not denying the validity of all that...but his stats are undeniably TRUE.

And apparently, 'roid free to boot.

he was steroid free, but did particpate in the era filled with amphetimines (sp) And I believe in one of his books he admitted to having greenies in his locker and using them. It was a different time then, Sounds like a sell out comment but it was different.

undeniably if I picked nine guys to have an all time team, Pete would be on the field somewhere and batting leadoff.

Sure was.

Doubt if I'd have made it through college without uppers.

We went to The Great American Ballpark last weekend. It's really nice. I enjoyed watching the Florence Freedom of the Pioneer League the night before just as much as the Reds, however. Baseball is baseball to me. I like it all.

The MLB isn't as bad as the NBA. Played basketball from 5 years old to 1 yr in college... HATE THE NBA.

if you arent watching baseball now you are missing one of the greatest players who will have ever played the game......Albert "The Machine" Pujols

I am not so sure Pujols could have cracked the lineup on the Big Red Machine.

( not that I really know who he is, but still if he was that good I would have heard of him)

there arent many players now that could even hold the jockstraps of the players back then.....

I have become a casual fan. I use to be a die hard Braves/ Cardinals fan. But now I can't stay awake for more than an inning or so. Excitement of seeing what players that played you had their card for that year has faded away.

what position does Pujols play?

First base.

Will never be another big red machine best team of the modern era

Would like to see them play the 27 cards

Pete Rose like him or not is the best player of all time

Met him 2 years ago in Vegas ended up talking to him for half hour or sowas in awe

you are right he should have told the truth and came clean but he did pay the price

have tapes of 75 and 76 reds that is the baseball I watch when I need a fix

First base.

did a little looking at Pujols. I am guessing he will be a HOFer.

but he is not booting Tony Perez off of first base or out of that batting order.

Yep, that was absolutely terrible. Got some venezuelan neighbors and imagine their helplessness, anger and what not. These players live for moments like these and to think that such a bad call took you out from the list of 20 of all time perfect games..... gives me the creeps :tinfoil:
