refridgerator question

Recommended Posts

Our refridgerator is allowing water to drip down and build up under the vegatable bins. I have to sop it out every few days or it will over flow the indention down there and drip out onto the floor.

I do not believe it is in any way associated with the icemaker.

It gets worse in very humid weather.

Anyone got any ideas on a fix?

Might be an air leak through the magnetic seal on the door or temperature setting in

the fridge part. Try turning down the temp in the fridge part. Look around the seal on the door for dirt and moisture. Hope that helps.:(

I have rented while I've been in college and mine does the same thing. To counteract, I used to buy the WalMart Potato Salad in the big bowls, I wash the bowls and put them right where it leaks. It does come out from the roof of the fridge portion and pretty much freezes very quickly...

Sounds like the vent is stopped up.

Check to see if there's a plastic piece in the upper middle portion of the refrigerator back.... It's an odd looking affair that has a sort of trap/goose neck in it that vents excess moisture. ( You won't be able to tell this just from looking at it, most likely. ) There should be a hole that you can run a pipe cleaner or something of the like through and clean out.

I wish I could give you a better description of the thing, but there's no telling what it will look like on what you've got.

Edit: I should add that you need to pull the 'frige out and look at it from behind. You're not apt to see much from the inside.

the drain is stopped up....or frozen...in the back of the freezer....hair dryer and some sort of "pipe cleaner outer"

wow, mine is currently doing the same thing.....in the middle of the fridge on the back there is a connector strip for the racks. just below where this strip connects to the back of the fridge, there is a small hole for the connector strip to fit into and this is where the water is coming into mine. I thought it might be a hose feeding the ice maker so I shut it off and that didn't help. So you guys are saying something is clogged under the fridge?

not necessarily under the fridge....automatic defrost drain line in the freezer is frozen.....usually caused by too much stuff in the freezer, restricting air flow.

thaw that drain line with a hair dryer...problem solved!

I had the opposite problem...my fridge was causing frost to form in my soft drinks!!

had to turn it down to it's lowest setting...:(

Hey mike, check your drain line/condenser drain (what they said...I have no idea but it sounded smart... :))

Hope you get it fixed!!

In the fridge section, we have two 1"X2" ducts in the ceiling at the far left and far right. We have two ordinary plastic cups to catch the water, which fills them up over a week's time. We emptied the entire fridge and left the doors open to let it thaw for almost two days, and then started over. The dripping came back and we just live with it.

The floor of the freezer compartment keeps a sheet of ice 1/2" thick, as well.

What he said.

The condensate drain/vent was rusted and clogged up on our old fridge, though mine ran down the back of the fridge into the floor.

As stated, can also be caused by too much stuff in the freezer so that the air can't circulate.

I spent a little time with Titan14 on the phone last night. All the above posts nailed the problem. I am going to deal with it offically this weekend. I think OS is coming over to help me eat all the food that defrosts ;). The wife has so much stuff crammed in there that there cannot be much air moving around. And I am 99% certain the drain line is clogged. The little drip pan on the top back of the fridge is full, I can see small stains where the water is dripping out of it.

I am guessing turn the thing off, clean out underneath it, unclog the drain line and hope the evaporator under the fridge is not burned out.

I gotta remember to stop and get a pack of pipe cleaners.

Thanks for all the help guys.

they went in the trash along with some chicken and some shrimp, oh and the popsicles. Of course when the war department gets home I will get a thrashing for throwing that stuff out. And of course there will be no belief that it was freezer burnt beyond recognition, but that I am an ass and just threw it out.

Compressed air is quite handy for clearing those lines. Carb cleaner should dissolve any gunk and shouldn't hurt the plastic.

You don't want carb cleaner in your 'fridge... It'll make the scallops taste even more strange than freezer burn does. :)
