Do you have any military pistol training that you might be able to document? If so, I believe that would wave the class requirement. I'm sure Phantom6 or somebody will chime in and give you the low-down. Otherwise, you'll probably have to take the class over again.

The military requirement will fulfill the actual shooting part but not the class part. Since the class deals with TN laws (to a degree.) Unfortunately it has been more than 6 months since yours expired. You will have to take the class again. Some of the places around here offer 2 fers for the class. Look in to the schools in your area.

Here's the scoop jeepbus.

My comments are in dark blue and I have changed the color of the pertinent passages to dark red.

Qualifications That Must Be Met Before Applying for a Tennessee Handgun Carry Permit

  • Effective July 1, 2005, all new handgun permit applicants must provide proof of U.S. Citizenship or Lawful Permanent Residency unless such applicant has already provided this proof and it is documented on their driver license record.
  • Effective July 1, 2005, Tennessee handgun carry permit law will now allow certain applicants already exempt from complying with firing range provisions of the current statute to also be exempt from any classroom requirements. Those current exceptions are applicants who prove to the department that within five (5) years from the date of application for handgun permit, the applicant has:

1. Been certified by the police officer's standards and training commission, or

2. successfully completed training at the law enforcement training academy; or

3. successfully completed the firearms training course required for armed security guards; or

4. successfully completed all handgun training (rifle will not work) of not less than four (4) hours as required by any branch of the military.

This means that you must have a certificate as proof of your accreditation or mention must be made on your DD214. Most MOS will not provide either but check to make sure.

Question 3

How do I Renew a Handgun Carry Permit?

  • Your handgun carry permit will expire four (4) years from the date it is issued.
  • Renewals can be submitted up to six (6) months prior to the expiration date. Any person whose handgun carry permit expires and such person applies for a renewal within six (6) months from the date of expiration, such person shall only be required to comply with the renewal provisions. (This doesn’t sound like the situation you find yourself in) However, you may not lawfully carry a weapon until you receive a new permit.
  • *If the renewal application is filed six (6) months or more from (this means beyond) the date of expiration, such person shall, for all purposes, be considered a new applicant.
  • The fee is $50.00. A background check will be conducted on all renewal applicants. A new permit will be mailed from the Central Handgun Permit Office. Permit Holders may legally carry with the receipt provided from the application.
  • A permit holder can submit a Renewal Application at any Driver License Center or renew by mail. Applications may be downloaded (click here) or, to receive a renewal application by mail call (615) 251-8590.
  • Complete and sign your application. Mail the application and the $50.00 fee payable by check or money order to the following address:

Tennessee Department of Safety

Handgun Permit Office

1150 Foster Ave.

Nashville, Tn 37243-1000

  • Incomplete applications cannot be processed.
  • FEES ARE NON-REFUNDABLE.

*Shall be required to meet all of the original requirements, including an eight (8) hour safety course, completing a new application, fingerprinting, and $115 non-refundable application fee.
