Sorry, Jack, but if the ruts can't be crossed with a tractor then there is no easy fix.

J.

I can't judge the size of the ruts from the pics, but a Bobcat or full sized Cat will work. Looks like the typical erosion problem, where most of the top soil is gone. You may not be able to get anything to take root unless you feed the soil (after you smooth it out), and then find a way to keep everything from washing away until you build a decent turf. I'm no expert.

The county may have somebody that can come out and give good advice for the best/cheapest fix. They may even provide some other types of assistance. It's in their best interest. All that mud can cause problems downstream.

He's focusing on getting a frontend loader for about 1,800 for one of his tractors, as this makes more economical sense. Renting a Bobcat for a month or two (how long it would really take him), which would get stuck in 20 minutes, would cost as much as the purchase that would be partially recouped from the sale of a tractor. But I really don't want to assemble one knowing that he'll not do anything other than smooth it all out and let erosion take over again.

If he is going to smooth it all back out again, he is going to have to install some silt fence or else it will be a repeat. I cannot really tell how much water is going through there, but you could grade it to give a designated path. If you do that, you will have to line it with rock or something. Good luck with it, looks like a mess none the less.

BTW, I was kidding with the kudzu ... hence the comments about the goats followed by the dogs guarding the goats and then the fencing ...

The easy fixes always have consequences that end up costing more than doing it right.

The rock lined (also called rip-rap) drainage mentioned by dats82, for controlling the drainage is probably his only viable option at this point.
