If you had to pick between those two, which one would you chose?

Just curious because I'd like to get one of these as my next gun.

Many of you know I have 2 9mm and 1 .357, and 1 .22 but I've never fired a .40 before though.

Having 2 9mm is that I have good amount of ammo supply so that would make it easier to buy more 9mm but I think 3 9mms guns is too much? Or am I wrong?

Should I just try something different than keeping the 9mm trend going?

This is for a fun range gun only though.

What's your opinions/votes?

Since I reload, I voted for the 9. I like to minimize the number of different calibers I have to have dies, etc. for.

I've had both and both will outshoot me any day of the week. Generally, I hate the .40s&w round. But the XD made it enjoyable to shoot. However, price and availability of ammo play a large part in what I buy and keep and 9mm is cheaper is and more plentiful. 9mm will get my vote any day of the week. Plus, you are already setup for it having a couple of other 9mm's and won't have to worry about hoarding yet another caliber of ammo.

I have about (7) 9mm pistols, one of them being an XD9 Tactical. Nothing at all wrong with having multiples in the same calibre. Makes it a lot easier to stock up. However, I do have a couple of .40's as well. It's a different round, I don't think it's better or worse, just different. I don't think the average person would spend the money on a gun just to see what the different ammo feels like.

I said average, none of us really qualify under that term.

I have the XD in 40 and like it a lot. I also have a much older S&W 659 in 9mm but they are 2 different firearms. I would have no problems with either the 40 or the 9mm but if I were in your situation I would most likely stick w/ the 9mm.

+1... I have a .40 that I carry occasionally, but if it's going to be a range gun I'd stick with the 9.

No doubt that the 9mm is a few pennies cheaper to shoot but I like to have as many handgun calibers as possible. If you reload it would be pointless. I like the 40 round as it is more plentyful on shelves generally than anything. It doesn't matter how cheap 9mm ammo is if you can't find it. If you go with a 40 in most autos you can drop a 9mm barrel or 357 sig in but not vis versa. There is a reason 40 is the most commonly used Police handgun caliber in the US.

In Memphis, 40 is scarce and 9mm is abundant. It varies depending on where you live.

Yes it does.

I found a lot of 25auto 32 and 357SIG on shelves one year ago. I am still haveing difficulty with finding 45 and 38spl here.

I have never fired an XD9 but I do have the XDm9. It is a sweet firearm and very accurate. I have not had any issues with it. I would at least shoot a 40 to see what is feels like and then make my decision. With that said, my vote would be for the 9mm.

Two 9's is enough. Get the .40 or .45 (would be my preference).

I tried to stay the course with all 9's. It gets old.

Now also have these cals: .22lr, .45acp, .38spcl, and .357mag (kind of a two for one on the last two cals...revolvers are great).

The basis for my opinion is this is a range gun. I have the XDSC .40 for my carry and its fine at the range. I think which XD is as important as the caliber. The XDSC is not the best range gun in the XD family IMHO.

I am looking forward to getting an XD9 Tactical for the range.

Thats my choice anyway. I really enjoy that caliber for carry and range purposes.

With that said, there is nothing wrong with either caliber. I would choose the one that i wanted most and never look back.:P

i got the XD 40, and my other half got the XD 40 subcompact, we we like both of them very much. But with guns, the more the better as far as i am concerned

It may depend on how much you shoot at the range. I have an XDsc .40 and like it a lot, but it's not much fun to shoot by the time I get to the end of 100 rounds. That could be the shorter barrell, but I know 9mm in a 5" barrell is easier on the hand than .40 in a 3".

An XDm-9 4.5" will probably be my next handgun purchase.

I vote for the 9mm. For your purpose of having it as a "range gun", the cheaper ammo makes it more useful.

If you decide that you like it well enough for carry, then the 9mm is sufficient for defense, when shooting with good hollowpoint ammo.

Also, Bud's Gun Shop has these on clearance for $399.00, delivered--hell of a bargain, that.

I vote for the 40. I bought an XDm 40 recently becuase over here on the east side of the Smokys, 40 is all you can find. Am I impressed by the 40? Not really. I like the 45ACP. I am impressed with the way the 40 shoots in the XDm. The XDm shoots great, without that snappy recoil that 40s are noted for. It's liable to make a believer out of me yet. My carry gun is neither a 9mm or a 40. I'm just so used to the comforting "THUMP" of my 45s. I have an XD45, Glock 36 and Colt 1911....
