night vision experience?

Recommended Posts

Kinda wanting to get something in night vision gear. Originally just thought I'd get a monocular of some sort so I could see what the dogs were barking at after dark. But a buddy who has some high end stuff said if you see it, you're probably gonna want to shoot at it. So his suggestion was to get something that could be mounted for use on a rifle. Got an eotech that's NV capable, but magnification would be nice.

He's got PVS14 and man it looks great, but my budget is way lower than that. Looked at some of the Yukon stuff at the gun show and the 2.5x50 wasn't bad. Hard to tell though since you're looking through a lens cap with a pin hole. Sometimes I wonder if they don't make the pin hole a little larger just to make it look better.

Most reviews I've hunted up are apparently people who've never looked through any other NV before, particularly the higher end stuff, so they really don't know how the Yukon compares, and just say it looks good. I don't expect it to look like the 14, but also want something better than looking through the bottom of a coke bottle.

I'd like something good out to 150 yds, but want to stay in the sub $800 range.

anybody out there got experience with the lower priced equipment?

ATN Aries Paladin. $500. Good out to 100 with the illuminator, I think it'd be okay at 150 or 200 with a better illuminator.

Pros: Battery life is good, illuminator is a separate unit that will mount to the top of the scope or to a rail. Image is okay, especially considering the price. Decent reticle. Mounts to a picatinny rail.

Cons: Relatively bulky and heavy. Image isn't nearly as good as some of the gen2 stuff (but you get what you pay for...)

I had a Yukon NVRS 3x42 Gen 1 rifle scope. I never mounted it as it is illegal to use on a rifle for hunting purposes. I got a good deal on it thats why I bought it. It worked good I could see out to 100 yards or so in pitch black with the illuminator. Sorry I ever sold it.

Night vision is one of those things that you really get what you pay for.... None of the cheaper units have ever impressed me much. But when I looked through a set of PVS-14's I fell in love. Save as much as you can and but the best unit you can.

I know you're right about that! But I can't seen dropping nearly 3K right now on something like that. Maybe $800, and I expect lower quality.

the pvs7 my bud has is quite unbelievable. It would be easy to pick out a man at SEVERAL hundred yards with just a little moon light.

After searching thru some threads, regarding the law, if you're not using any added light is it still a no no? Actually I'm wanting to pick off the occasional skunk or yote on my own property.

Asked my FIL that about hunting deer because I thought you simply couldn't use unnatural lighting, but that you could kill it if you could see it with the naked eye. He said the MS wardens didn't care. That nightime is the deer's refuge/respite from hunters. Kind of like nighttime putting them out of season, temporarily. I said if you can only use natural light (sun) couldn't you use another natural light, the moon. He says not. I says it sounds hokey.

We started farming veggies again and since he didn't get any deer last season, I told him that it was my understanding that you can kill animals that eat our crops. He said yes but you're supposed to let it fall and let nature dispose. That you can't keep it. I say that's F'ed.

I believe you can shoot deer anytime you like, season or no, on your property of they are a nuisance?

You must be issued a permit before you can kill deer out of season for the purpose of protecting your crops. You also must show proof that the animal is destroying your crops. If an animal is killed it must be disposed of properly. I'm sure the local TWRA Officer will give you the info on whether you can keep it or not. As far as artificial light some states allow you to spot light deer on your property but you cannot have a firearm at the time.
