Daley, SCOTUS, and Zombies in Chicago

Sounds like he's "preparing" to end run it by enacting an unreasonable set hoops to jump through, but we'll see:

Mayor Daley Talks Guns, Threatens To Shoot Reporter

Emily Zanotti

The Supreme Court may overturn the Chicago gun ban, siding with the recent Second Amendment ruling declaring that the language of the amendment provides for an individual right to own a firearm - a right not to be infringed by the federal government at least. Or they might not overturn the Chicago gun ban, siding with the Tenth Amendment and a state's right to pass laws in accordance with the welfare of their citizens. Either way, two things are certain: it will probably not make much of a difference (zombie reference to come in a moment), considering that criminals don't really care about laws anyway and we'll still have Mayor Daley.

Mayor Richard Daley today rejected the idea that the Supreme Court is likely to overturn the city's gun ban, but said that he will be ready to act quickly to put in place restrictions on gun ownership if it does.

It's defeatist to prepare new gun laws ahead of the court's ruling, which should come before the body recesses at the end of June, Daley said.

"You have to have confidence in the Supreme Court, Maybe they'll see the light of day," Daley said at a City Hall news conference. "Maybe one of them will have an incident and they'll change their mind over night, going to and from work."

The mayor said if the court overturns the Chicago ban, as expected, he'll quickly present new legislation to the City Council.

He also said that the handgun ban has been "very effective," but that's evidently not true, unless you consider that the violence in Chicago could get worse. Laws don't make things just disappear - even behaviors - and Chicago is a shining example of how gun laws don't seem to make guns disappear. This is particularly true when a city has a gun ban and that city is connected to cities without a gun ban, in other states such as Indiana, via public transportation.

Think of it as a zombie situation. If the problem is zombies and your solution is to draw a line around yourself in the dirt and call it a "zombie free zone," you're probably not going to remain undead for very long, because the zombies don't really care that you've declared yourself a zombie free zone and will proceed accordingly. Same with criminals. The worst part of this situation is, of course, that you are left helpless because you used an ineffective method of protection. Now, this is not to say that guns are good. They're not. Ensuring people have the proper understanding and take the proper care of their firearms is essential, and exercise responsibility with power is only common sense. Reasonable restrictions are fine. A registry may be necessary. But outlawing guns puts law-abiding people at a significant disadvantage, because guns are dangerous.

And if you don't believe me, or Mayor Daley - as one reporter dared - well, then, Mayor Daley would be happy to provide you with a demonstration.

During the news conference, Daley reacted with the help of a prop when a reporter suggested the city's handgun ban has been ineffective, given the number of shootings that still occur in Chicago.

"It's been very effective," Daley said, picking up a gun from the dozens displayed on a nearby table. "If I put this up your butt, you'll find out how effective it is. Let me put a round up your, you know."

Oh, we know.

He'll set up all the same roadblocks DC has since Heller. He'll just make it incredibly painful, and you can forget carrying.

Can someone please get out a dictionary from around 200 years ago and tell me the various definitions of the word "bear". I'm willing to bet the the phrase "found on one's person" is in there somewhere. I really doubt the FF's intended for them to be carried only within the confines of one's house, and I'm pretty sure that's not written in the 2A. I think the SCOTUS really lost sight of this in Heller.

OS, you gotta be careful with your thread titles. I was heading out the door to my car with my .308 before I realized maybe I had read too much into it. I guess it was wishful thinking, but I just assumed Daley and the justices were literally walking around moaning "Unnnnhhhh" and feedling on the brains of the living up in Chicago.

Lesson learned. Always check the post first.

Daley isn't about to roll over and let the peasants defend themselves in his fiefdom. He'd rather they die than lose even the slightest hint of control in what he considers his personal property.

He really ought to be stripped of his bodyguard and dropped off in a bad part of town.

Doubt it would change his opinion, but the citizens of Chicago might get a chance to choose their own mayor.

hate Daley or love him, the people up there keep electing him. Do they not have the right to elect who they want?

To those of us in our right mind he is nuts. But fortunately those in other states do not have the right to make decisions for others in states other than our own.

I dunno????

Only fair, as I spent the time to look back over your last few posts to see why you might have been put "on vacation".

Good one, I must say.

Thank you, sir. :)

I agree... If there is not voter fraud. And articles like this make me think there might be some.

But if they want him in, I'm no worse off. Except for when he messes around with stuff outside of Chicago.

As I have said before… I am pretty sure what the ruling will be in McDonald. I am not sure what Daley will do; but it will be entertaining if the Chicago handgun ban is shot down.

<O:p</O:p

Daley is elected; and he continues to get elected. Sure there is voter fraud in Chicago as there is anywhere; but I doubt it makes much difference.

<O:p</O:p

Daley is elected by poor people that don’t want to work; they want to lie on the couch and watch Oprah. Their children are either killing others and going to prison or are being killed. They are uneducated and believe that banning guns will make a difference.

<O:p</O:p

You gotta admit; it’s quite a feat for a white guy to remain the King of Chicago.

Stand-by for entertaining stuff when the McDonald decision is announced. :)

Right to bear arms - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I can't believe I used wiki. They agree, though. To bear means to carry.

I wish i had a dictionary that old, but evidently it isn't needed:D

Yeah, I didn't think we really had to go back 200 years to find the definition still holds true. I was being a tad sarcastic.

The point I guess I was trying to make was you have to look at the 2A in the context of the time, it was written. The wording of the 2A is even kind of backwards, but that's how people talked back then. The people who comprised the milita's back then brought their own guns with them. They were not handed out to them like some military issue. That is where the "National Guard theory" falls apart for the anti's.

My wife and I were just talking about the word "context"; laughing about it, really. That usually is the anti or progressive way to make an argument against an easily understood sentence, such as the 2nd Amendment; changing the context to suit their argument. The guys who put that document together(Bill of Rights) provided their own "context" when they wrote it. They wrote it eloquently. :P

After reading that letter Washington wrote, posted in another thread, I don't think you could have found better penmanship, regardless of time.
