I had always hoped to go see a launch in person myself. Never have though. I think they are making a mistake retiring the shuttles with nothing else to go to.

About 12 miles. It's hard to get closer for the general public, even boats have to stay 12 miles away I hear. It wasn't loud where I was but it a constant rumbling like thunder that doesn't stop. TV and video doesn't do it justice, the rocket burn is very bright and brilliant even for 12 miles, almost hard to look at. You get a little adrenilin rush watching it. Titusville is the best viewing area where you can see the whole launch from the pad up, Cocoa Beach where I stayed, you can only see it after a few seconds so we went to Titusville and lucked out on a good spot. It was very crowded there.

Got to see a launch many years ago. It still rates as one of the top 5 most impressive things I have ever seen.

Lived in Titusville in the mid 60's...dad was a NASA electronics engineer, went to elementary school there...when there was a launch we'd have "assembly" on the front lawn of the school...and watch the Gemini rockets go up. We were literally across the river from the VAB...and launch pad complex. somewhere in the family photo archives are pics of us kids standing next to a "crawler" and at launch pad 39A...those shuttles going up are truly AWE inspiring

Only thing better than a shuttle launch is a shuttle night launch! I used to have a friend who worked for the company that rebuilt the SRB's. He was able to get us many passes to the base viewing area. One of these launches was an afternoon flight that was delayed until approx 9pm. Spectacular is the only word that I can use to describe it!

Here is a video I found on youtube of a night launch. Truly breathtaking. I could only imagine how awesome it would be in person!
