I want to buy a new camera and need some help.

I want to get a new DLSR camera. I don't know much about them so I am turning to you guys for some help. My only requirement is that it is at least 10 mp and a DSLR. Im trying to stay under $600-$700 for the body and a lens.

I have been looking at the Nikon D3000. Any opinions on it? What other cameras would you recommend?

edit: also, there have been some Nikons popping up lately on Nashville craigslist. If you figure out how to look at em, might be a money saver. If I didn't already have one that I just got, I would probably be all over this, http://nashville.craigslist.org/pho/1738639257.html. Its not 10 mp but according to the Rockwell fellow, that really doesn't matter unless your going to blow something up to a really large size.

Canon Rebel XS is a good model in that range too.

Oh and check out www.dpreview.com. It's an awsome site that will let you compare different cameras and accessories.

My advice to you would be to save a little more and go with the Nikon D90, and save up some more to get their 18 to 200 MM lens This is a camera that will do everything but this would be way over what you want to spend

I have a Rebel xt. Only 8MP but takes great photos. I never go larger than 8x10 prints so it suits me just fine. Your lenses make or break your photos. You can have the most expensive, high tech 500MP camera out there, but if you shoot with crappy glass, you'll get crappy photos.

Hey, I like Canon DSLR more than Nikon but the one that I like and will be eventually getting is WAY over what he would want to spend, Jason if you would like a non DSLR camera that is outstanding and will do 20x30 prints and shoot RAW photos, I would spend $400 on this

That Cannon S90 looks like it takes great pictures but I already have a Sony 10.1MP point and shoot. I have had the itch for a DSLR for awhile and am going to be taking a few trips this summer and want a new camera to take with me.

My advice is to not get sucked into the megapixel craze. Unless you are printing poster sized pictures, more mps = wasted money. If you have the choice of loosing some resolution you'll never need over extra cash for lenses, cards, etc, go low.

Personally, I'd narrow it down to Canon or Nikon. I like Canon myself, always owned something from them since I was a teenager. Either brand is great tho. The good thing is there are tons of lenses available for them, and you can buy them used. Like BK said, the lens is really what makes the camera.

You might even consider a used camera. You might be able to step up to a better camera and still meet your budget.

I've got an 8MP Canon DSLR that takes great pics. I rarely print any out, and they look fine on my monitor. I do want to upgrade to the latest Rebel they just released, the T2i. Has gotten rave reviews, and is making me lustful. It may be just over your budget at $900, but look for rebates to bring it down a bit. Also, it's predecessor the T1i was released only about a year ago, and really the main difference was an increase from 15 to 18MP. I think you might find some outstanding deals on that camera since it's no longer the newest. Both come with an 18-55mm Image Stabilized lens, which is very desireable.

One thing that firearms and photography have in common, there is never a shortage of something you want to buy next. Good luck in your search.

I bought my wife a Canon Rebel DSLR. We love it. My old Canon Rebel SLR lenses work on it; even the auto focus.

I have the Canon Rebel XSi and love it! 12Mp is as good a resolution as you will ever need. Makes for good pictures when cropped or blown up. It is also really easy to use. I got the kit from Costco; came with the body, an 18-55mm image stabilized (IS) lens, 55-200mm IS lens, and a 2gb memory card.

Promise me, though, that you will learn to use whatever you buy. Do not just keep it on Auto like my wife does. That drives me nuts. I took a class and learned how to use all of the functions and settings. I can take some amazing photos if I put a little work into it.

I agree. These are the only two choices. I've got a Nikon D80. I love it.

I'm sure a Canon is equally great. By the way, i have Adobe Photoshop Elements 6.0. It will do anything you want with the nikon .nef files.

That Ken Rockwell site I recommended to you also says that when he is asked about what DSLR to buy, he recommends the D5000. There is alot of useful stuff sort of hidden on that site, but he has a search box. Good read FWIW.

I bought mine off Amazon and had free shipping...remember, anything over $25 gets free shipping.

Downside is that it takes forever to get it though but look at this way, you save about 20 bucks off shipping and can use it towards accessories tho! Took me about a week to get my camera with free shipping.
