Spring Squirrel Season

Now that spring squirrel season has opened last weekend, I'm going to try to hit the woods and see what I can find. Have any of you squirrel hunted in the spring at Wolf River WMA in Fayette County? I've only done fall squirrel hunting out there....not a bad location. I live in Shelby County and there are not a lot of public land opportunities close by...the closest that I know of is Wolf River WMA in Fayette County and Chickasaw State Park WMA. I heard there is also a WMA in Tipton County. I'm pretty sure Shelby Forest is closed to spring squirrel.

I'd like to go a couple times before the season closes in June and pop a few with the 22 rifle. Any other folks here squirrel hunters??? If only I can convince my wife to cook the things!!! I haven't had good squirrel and gravy and rice in a long time. At least she'll cook deer.

Never heard of spring squirrel season before! I'll have to check it out. Is that something new this year? My grandmother used to cook them in a black iron skillet, on the top of the stove, just like southern fried chicken... very good on a cold winter day. She also made dumplings with them in it, just like chicken and dumplings... also good.

Spring rat opened May 8th and runs until June 13th 10 per day.

I love to squirrel hunt. I have never hunted in the spring season, always just the fall. I might set aside some time to sneak off to the woods before the season closes.

i used too but its more fun with open sights on a .22 plus no lead to chip a tooth on with a head shot .

just in case your not kidding if you like turkey or chicken you'll like squirrel or rabbit. cook it the same way and you cant go wrong.

That sounds like fun, but I only have a 50 cal

I was thinking of using my bow with Judo tipped arrows. Good practice for the upcoming deer season.

I started squirrel hunting with a .50 cal. Start your load with about 60 grain of powder, .490 round ball with a greased patch. Sight it in and shoot some rats. There is no better way to hone your shooting skills for deer hunting, than to squirrel hunt with M/L. Just as with any weapon, most squirrel will be on the ground, so more attention has to be paid as to a backstop.

I parboil them and then batter and fry them to brown. Then into the oven to finish up. Very good. Especially the young ones that you get in the spring.
