I like one person's response to Mike in Canada -

Sure, my friend, those self-defense courses are great exercise. So when someone breaks into my house and shoots me from down the hall, I'll be sure to run up to him and poke him in the eye or something. Responsibly, of course.

Sorry, if somebody is shooting at me, I'm shooting back. I'm not going to take the chance on whether or not the crane kick will do the trick.

I wish our friends in Canada and Britain had that option.
