Whats The Difference?

I am looking at the Hogue over-molded stock for a rifle I will be getting. What is the difference in a Full Bed Block Stock, and a Piller Bed Block Stock? Which one is the better for accuracy? Both are made so that the barrel is free floating. This stock would be for a 8mm Mauser 98 that has been sportierized with a wood stock. Thanks guys.

As far as I know, rifle bedding is the process of filling all gaps between the action and the stock of a rifle. It's usually done aftermarket at least with an epoxy based material. This support creates a precise fit for the contact surfaces between either the action and the stock, the barrel and the stock or both. It's an accurizing method.

A full bed block of the action with the barrel floated is the most common type of bedding for longer range rifles with heavy barrels. As you know, a free-floating barrel will generally produce the greatest accuracy. However, a pressure pad or pillar under the barrel just forward of the action can sometimes improve accuracy by acting on barrel harmonics and reducing stress on the action from the weight of the barrel. Pillar bedding can be used to float the action as well as the barrel, but the process is more difficult (read expensive here) to accomplish correctly.

Which is better for the rifle you are considering replacing the barrel on? Well in my opinion which doesn't mean much because I'm a pistol shooter and my shotguns generally don't have to be more accurate than what it takes to stop a threat in a 20 x 20 room, that would depend upon the rifle itself. What kind of barrel harmonics does it produce, how accurate you want the rifle and whether a.) you re willing to spend the money to experiment or b.) if you know others with the rifle that have already tackled this question and have answered it satisfactorily.

Hope that helps.
