snub 357

Recommended Posts

I have a question which I hope someone here can answer. Is it worth the extra power and extra barrel length to trade a sw 642 for a taurus 605 357 with a 3 inch barrel. The longer barrel could do double duty for me when I go horse riding but I realize I MAY be dropping down in quality. What do you people think? Is it worth the power and longer barrel?

No.

Keep the 642 for carry and get a 2 ½” OR 4” S&W K-frame .357 for riding.

It really depends on the distance you might be shooting.

As far as quality goes… What is your life worth?

Do not go Taurus revolver, QC has gone downhill in the last 20 years. Do not get a .357 snubbie to shoot .357 ammo. The .357 was never meant to achieve maximum velocity out of a snubbie. Even at its inefficiencies out of a snubbie it is hard as heck to get a followup shot. With a save your behind gun you need to be able to put multiple rounds into the kill zone quickly with either hand one-handed. .357 out of a snubbie weak hand in a panic will likely not work well. For a few who practice and have experience it might work, but doubtful.

Thanks guys!! I don't have the money to buy another gun right now so it was trade or nothing. I think I will keep the smith and look for an old ruger security six with a 3inch barrel or maybe an old blued Smith. I just have 200 rounds of magnum ammo and nothing to do with it so I was thinking of trading up to the magnum.

I'll get blasted for this but I dumped a SW 442 for a Taurus 605 .357 2".

Why you ask?

Simple, I could never practice with the 442. It would rip the skin off my fingers, even with the light cheapo stuff. The Taurus won't do this, even with powerful .357 loads. I have never had a problem with it.

I've had bad, bad luck with Taurus--both their autos and wheelguns.

If you're wanting to trade your 642 for a .357 snubby, I'd highly recommend the Ruger SP101.

My first .357 revolver was an S&W 340PD. Wonderfully light, but painful to shoot. I still carry it, but I picked up a Ruger SP101 for practicing at the range. The extra weight does a lot to tame the recoil.
