Bedside Suggestion

Wanting to call on the grand knowledge of this group and get some ideas of a bedside suggestion for storing my Glock so it is in reasonably quick reach at night. Now the tough part have two kids (6 and 10) so got be securable in some way. Thoughts, ideas, links whatever?

I would also suggest some sort of "safety chat" with your children. By 6 and 10, I think they should be well aware of the dangers of messing with guns.

I spent quite a bit of time with my 11-year-old daughter when she was younger, and I've never felt uncomfortable about her messing with my guns. I keep an XD40 and a Remington Marine Magnum sitting next to my bed 24/7. Well, while we are in the house, anyway. She's always been very good about keeping her distance.

Kids are pretty good with guns. Both have been to range and we have had numerous talks about safety. Not really worried too much about older one. 6-year-old makes me a little nervous still at his age.. Reason got be able to secure it in someway was needed. I have a gun safe across the room in wall. Just looking to get a little closer and little faster access in case something goes bump in the night..

I have been thinking of doing what I did for a holster in my van.

Using velcro backed up with super glue on the sticky part and then mounting the holster on the back of the night stand. That puts it out of sight but still easily accessible.

There were some links on the USCCA forum a few months ago of companies that were making such things using magnets. I will try to find them and post them if I do.

But my velcro deal has held up well in the van and should work just fine for behind the night stand.

As for the kids, in order to kill the curiosity I let them handle the guns, when I got my first the PPK my 11 year old daughter took her turn and promptly got her little hand caught in the slide.....it hurt pretty bad and I had to get it off of her, needless to say she does not ask to see the guns.

My boys on the other hand do and I will double or triple check to make sure they are unloaded and then hand them to them and ask if it is loaded, any answer other than YES it goes back in the safe, that didnt take long for them to figure out and now they know the right answer, and also they ask less to see them.

Removing the curiosity and imparting the basic safety stuff is VERY imprortant.....Your kids are old enough for this I would think.

If I had children at home, I would definitely go with a small safe/lockbox with an electronic lock preferably 4 numbers for ease of access. For my personal preference as I am right handed and sleep on the left side of the bed, I would place this on my nightstand with a regular type lamp on top of it. I would probably also use a cover or even a doiley on it as to not draw attention to the lock box. If I were left handed I would sleep on the right side of the bed etc.

I don't wany to stray to far off post but am curious. Did many of you in my age group or older ( I am 43 ) grow up in a home with several firearms of all shapes and sizes and just knew or had enough common sense not to point a gun at anything or anyone unless you were hunting or target shooting Why are todays kids different than we were ? Just curious if anyone agrees and has an opionion ?

I keep my main carry in one of these beside the bed.

But for my night stand buddy, I use this. I found a guy selling a lot of 6 and bought 2 different lots. Each person I sold them to wanted one......They're kinda like a dummy lock, only they actually can be locked. I can have the lock dropped and hammer cocked in about 2 sec.

Best advice given thus far. There's no such thing as "childproof" and one can't hide anything well enough.

In all seriousness (I'll try)...I'm digging the gunvault idea just for storage sake when I'm not home, and my family is. My gun safe is downstairs, and don't want to haul my bedside gun every day.

Threads like this always make me reconsider all of my methods.

Diff kids are diff wrt maturity, so if you really don't trust your youngest to keep his hands off, I'd look at a biometric safe or similar - something they won't be able to get into no matter how many combinations they try.

I've outlived most all the folks who would care about the skeletons...not all that old, but the rest were a faster crowd.
