Let me start off saying I'm not going to sell this, it was a gift from my mother in law, it belonged to my wife's late father. I just would like to know a little about the rifle so I can share with my kids when they ask about it.

What I know.

Its a Weatherby Vanguard made in Japan in .243W, best I can tell its about 35 years old, but thats a SWAG at best. Looks to have a walnut stock(yet another guess).

Are these still made in Japan? What should I get it insured for? I looked on GB and a few other sites, but I have no idea if the age makes it more valuable (or less).

I did send in the bolt for the recall I found on Weatherby's site.

Ill post up some pics once I get some time

thanks,

Jason

Yes, the Weatherby Vanguard is still made by Howa in Japan. They first made the Vanguard in 1970 as a budget alternative to the Mark V. As far as value, I really don't know if age would effect it much, if at all. Insure it for whatever it's worth to you, the replacement cost would probably be less than $800. You might want to give Weatherby a call and give them the SN to see if they can tell you the year of manufacture.

You can get a new syn stock weatherby vanguard for $399. Your gun is prob worth around $400 if it is around 95% and wood stocked. Good rifles, but no Mark V. I have one myself and it is a great rifle.
