Is there any down side to a 54 in reliability or parts ( high cap mags, ya know the real good stuff ), compared to the 39's ?

Are you talking about a specific gun, or just the caliber in general?

Magazine availability is going to be highly dependent on the gun itself not the caliber. That being said, since the standard AK-47 is a 7.62 x 39, and it is probably the most weapon in the world...I would go with the 7.62x39 having more options.

Odds are either one I get will be a Yugo gun. I do not have one picked out just kinda sorta looking at them, I do however live by the bigger is better motto :) .

The x54 has been in service for over 100 years and the x39 has been around for about 60. The x54 is comparable to a .30-06 where the x39 is more akin to a 30-30. That is a big power difference. The x54 is the defacto combloc long range sniper round that hits and kicks like a mule. The x39 is a medium range round designed originally for suppressive fire out to about 300 meters(400 at absolute best). They are different animals there are many more high capacity firearms designed around the x39. The only magazine fed x54 guns I can think of are the Russian Dragunov, Chinese NHM86 and the Romanian PSL all of these rifles are fed by a 10 round magazine. The x39 in it's many Kalashnikov variants is available in 5,10,20,30,40 round magazines as well as 75 round drum magazines.

Thats about all I can find myself , Thanks for the help ! The Dragunov copy is what I have kinda looked at, I have also thought about a 5.4x94 chambered AK since the ammo and guns are dirt cheap right now. I have a love for the russian and German guns, I can not help it.

If you like Russian guns it doesn't get any better than the VEPR. A properly converted (AKUSA) SAIGA is pretty darn cherry also.
