A suspicious vehicle in the heart of Times Square led the police to clear thousands of tourists and theatergoers from the area on a warm and busy Saturday evening.

Police officials said a witness reported a running Nissan Pathfinder with Connecticut plates, with smoke coming out of the back. A bomb squad robot popped the back latch of the Pathfinder, and officers found what they initially believed was a bomb. The vehicle was found to contain explosives, gasoline, propane and burned wires, a Fire Department officer told Reuters.

The officer, who did not give his name because he was not authorized to speak to the news media, said that a man was seen fleeing the S.U.V. and that the police evacuated the area in case there were other threats nearby.

The officer said that the police were treating the vehicle as a “failed device.” The police were searching for a suspect.

The license plates on the Nissan were registered to a Ford, the police said.

A New York City firefighter who told Reuters he arrived early on the scene said that the vehicle was smoking and that he saw “a flash” from the back of the it. “We put two and two together” and the evacuation was ordered, he said.

Confirmed!

“It appears to be a car bomb left in a Pathfinder between Seventh and Eighth,” said Deputy Commissioner Paul J. Browne, the Police Department’s chief spokesman.

The device, he said, contained “explosive elements” that included “propane tanks, some kind of powder, gasoline and a timing device.”

They should find and fry the bastard while the whole world watches...

This car bomb crap is getting old, FAST. If we found these people and put them in the chair and put that :D on youtube and newschannels, it would probably stop.

very lucky it did not detonate.

+1

They have been able to get some surveillance video from nearby businesses, and are hoping for more.

I thought I remember reading something about New York City installing cameras and bomb sniffing devices all over the city. Maybe I'm thinking of something else.

My thoughts exactly, except I personally think he should die a slow, painful death while everyone watches on the news and youtube.

What pisses me off about this country, is that if and when this guy gets caught there will be people protesting if he isn't treated in a fair and humane way. I understand that there are cases where they may catch the wrong guy in a situation like this, but if they catch him and prove that it's him, he should be executed.

For real... People will scream that America didn't treat him well enough. While those terrorist punks were in Gitmo, they were treated better than they've ever been. I'm all for not trying to become the bad guy, but whenever someone comes over here to KILL AMERICAN PEOPLE... Fry them... Fry Them... Fry Them. I'm all about forgiving people, but let God do that while he's strapped in the chair.
