Is .30-'06 AP still legal?

Recommended Posts

Is .30-06 AP ammo legal in Tennessee now? I shot a lot of it at the AEDC range years ago and also mail ordered Talon remanufactured AP to shoot out there when it was on the market. The CMP will have surplus AP for sale soon but won't ship to Tennessee. Looking at the pdf site below it looks like it is illegal now. When did the law change?

sort of OT but what do you shoot it at?

I have bought it at a gunshow here before, buck a round. Most of it has been duds so far. Not planning on firing anymore of it. it did not penetrate through my inch thick plate. Made a fair little gouge though.

I saw today where CMP will be selling AP very soon and will not ship to TN.

Why, I do not know. Is there some specific law against it in this state? I think they are just being overly cautious. Lawyers. :usa:

Slightly off topic, but did you know that Sportsman's Guide will not ship bayonets to TN?

Statute says:

" (9) "Restricted firearm ammunition" means

any cartridge containing a bullet coated with a

plastic substance with other than a lead or lead

alloy core or a jacketed bullet with other than a

lead or lead alloy core or a cartridge of which the

bullet itself is wholly composed of a metal or

metal alloy other than lead. "Restricted firearm

ammunition" does not include shotgun shells or

solid plastic bullets; "

This make the AP ammo a no no?

What about the newer solid or no lead bullets?

Was that a TN statute or a federal one?

how much is the cmp gonna sell it for? Wonder if you could pick it up at the south store?

I've got a few rounds and have shot a few. All have worked well. Friend has a piece of 1.5 inch plate steel and it made hole, looked like it had been drilled, just a little flash out remaining on the back side.

AP ammo is often more accurate than Ball ammo. That's why target shooters used it to practice with in the past. It weighed 165 grains which was close to the 172 grain weight of match ammo so the trajectory was similar. Many thousands of rounds were put down range at AEDC. The DCM supplied it to the rifle club there. AP was designed to penetrate 1/4" of armor plate and will shoot thru 5/8" mild steel at 100 yards so you have to be careful with your backstop.

The decision to not ship AP ammo to a particular state or territory is based either on a clear prohibition against AP ammo or on broad wording of the appropriate statute coupled with the official attitude of the courts and law enforcement in that state or territory. CMP will not ship AP ammo to any of the following: Hawaii, Illinois, Kentucky, Maine, Mississippi, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Tennessee, District of Columbia, Guam, Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands, California, Louisiana, Michigan, and Rhode Island.
As for everyone quoting law - only state law applies and how "you" interpret state law is how "you" interpret state law. Please see the opening post in this thread. As I wrote earlier, we will revisit some it will take a few days.

Got my CP newsletter in the email yesterday ... now they are shipping to TN??

LATEST CMP SALES NEWS:

*** DO NOT REPLY TO THIS EMAIL ADDRESS. THIS IS AN AUTOMATED ACCOUNT AND ANY REPLY WILL NOT BE READ ***

AP .30-06 M2 BALL: The .30-06 AP ammo that we now have available includes headstamps: AYR, SL, TW, and LC. Dates of manufacture vary from the 1940s to the 1950s. Most of the ammo is corrosive, but some may be non-corrosive. The ammo is packaged in 8 round M1 Garand enbloc clips, in bandoleers, in spam cans. Purchases of multiple cans will be shipped in what appear to be the original wooden crates (two spam cans per crate). Cans and crates will be selected luck of the draw as to the headstamp. 4C3006U202-192P. Single spam can (192 rounds). $60.00. S&H at $8.95 per can. CMP will not ship any AP ammo to Massachusetts, Washington D.C., Puerto Rico, or the Virgin Islands. The following states do have laws regarding AP ammo, but the laws are unclear as to whether or not they apply to .30-06 AP ammo, since this ammo was designed for use in a rifle and not in a handgun. Customers from these states should be aware that even though .30-06 AP may be currently sold in their states, there is a risk of arrest and prosecution for the possession of .30-06 AP, depending on how their local law enforcement officers interpret their state definition of "Armor Piercing or Restricted ammo". These states are: California, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Michigan, Mississippi, Rhode Island, Tennessee, New York, New Jersey, Hawaii, and Nevada. Residents of these and all other states should check your state and local laws on ammunition sales before ordering. Even in states where state law does not prohibit AP, there may be cities within that state that prohibit or restrict possession of AP ammo. See the ammunition tab on Estore at https://estore.odcmp.com.

I saw that, too. It looks like they'll ship it here now. I don't need any of it so I haven't tried to buy any.

I ordered some over the weekend and have received an email indicating it's being processed. So far so good. I do believe they will ship it. May need to order some more though, AP and the belt linked for a 1919.

I know this thread is from WAY back, but I had someone asking me about the law on AP ammo and wanting the exact TCA number for it. The one listed above (TCA 39-17-1301) mentions exploding hollow-points but I didn't see a specific reference to armor piercing ammo per se. Anyone happen to know it off the top of their heads? Thanks.

It doesn’t appear that it’s illegal to have “Restricted Firearm ammunition" unless you have it while committing a crime of violence.

So, if you go on a killin' spree with 300 grain Barnes TTSX bullets, you're gonna get in trouble. Got it.

I am confused (what's new). Isn't a lot of surplus mosin ammo a Jacketed bullet with other than a solid lead core? I thought most have a steel core.

Glenn

Read again.

"restricted ammo" simply defines it.

It's only illegal to use it in a crime (like a criminal would be worried about that).

Most Russian ammo period has partial or full steel core.
