Bolt ejection help.

Recommended Posts

Posted

I have a remington 700 (bolt action). I went shooting today and after firing a round, I would pull back the bolt and the shell would not eject out. I would manually have to pull it out before loading the next road. It's not a HUGE deal as I practice controlled shooting so I'm shooting one round and shooting it slow. I would like the gun to function properly however. It also seemed that sometimes, the bolt would hold onto the casing, but not every time. The only thing constant is the casing would not eject. Thoughts?

Is the plunger style ejector still pushing the round out of the boltface? If so, I'd say extractor as well.

It sounds like the extractor is doing it's job, if it is holding on and pulling the spent shell out of the chamber. The small semi round shaped ejector is located opposite the extractor, and is what kicks the shell out as the bolt is pulled back. The spring under it may also be weak.

Remove the bolt from the gun. Then take a fired (empty) shell casing and hook it under the extractor claw. Then rock it down on the ejector to see if there is spring tension. It should have enough spring to it to kick the shell out after firing.

A new ejector, or ejector and spring should not cost too much, and with your shooting friend's help can probably be easily replaced. Good luck.
