Musical Milestones

I honestly cannot recall a time when music wasn't influential on me.

My mother went to Juliard and my father was a fan of music, though can't play anything and has no musical ability. He had a huge collection of 50's R&R, from Buddy Holly and Elvis to Carl Perkins, Gene Vincent, Duane Eddy, Eddie Cochran and on and on. He also had a big collection of old soul music Ray Charles to Otis Redding and a lot of the Memphis sound. By far though his biggest collection of music was old country, from way back up to Hank Williams, Merle Haggard. My father's family was old Nashville and my grandfather knew everyone. We attended Opry several times a year and I listened to a ton of musicians in homes around the fire so to speak. It was a cool experience.

My mom had a ton of Big Band stuff which I have always loved and still listen to all the time. I started playing the piano at a young age and then moved on to the guitar. I also had a the chance due to my mother's mom having lived in Africa for many years and my visits there to be influenced by their music there. We even had a boy who was an African drummer live here in the states with us for a year.

My own musical tastes were a culmination of all of those things plus I guess when I was 10 or 11 a neighbor who was older than me introduced me to the 60's Rock like The Doors and Hendrix and Cream and that stuff blew me away. That led me to other British blues stuff from the time and it brought me full circle back to the blues in Memphis and Mississippi and I love old blues, especially MS Delta blues. Just about anything guitar heavy and I was there. I saw everyone I could see, saw SRV probably 20 times.

In the 80's I did get into metal and still listen to metal every day that I walk into the gym. Great workout material. I don't have much use for heavy rock after the early 90's period or so. In fact I still listen to most things I listened to 20 years ago, very little new stuff. The stuff I grew up on I have never tired of.

C.C Deville is a masterful guitar player. He was classically trained and the chops in most of the Poison songs are definitely note worthy.

Just as Geoff Tate of Queensryche was an Opera singer which shows his vocal ability.

Now Sid Viscious on BASE was a completely different story.

This shows on the album that poison put out after C.C. was put out/left the band...it SUCKED

First got into music in 69 or 70, I was about 12.

If they were on the Woodstock album I was into it. In a nutshell I have never gotten past Soul Sacrifice and Wooden Ships. They don't make music like that anymore.

One of my first musical memories is of listening to Johnny Cash do "Burning Ring of Fire" on the radio of my dad's Corvair. He passed in 64 so it must have been early that year or maybe late in 63. My first record purchase was Beatles 65.

I recall staying up late at night listening to WOWO on am radio.

I ran away to Athens, GA with my wild cousin in 70 to catch the Allman Brothers.

The rest is history, including Rare Earth, The Who, Led Zeppelin, Emerson, Lake, and Palmer, CSNY, Muddy Waters.....and on and on.

I've been blessed to enjoy a lot of good music. And honestly I still get out on a regular basis. Live music has always been very important for my soul.
