Rush can be a real douche sometimes.

I've enjoyed him for quite a few years as an entertainer above all, but I've pretty much had enough - he's become a one-trick pony.

Beck is still wacko and fresh enough to pick up the slack, for a while yet, anyway.

I've felt that Boortz has struck the right balance over the long haul.

EDIT: apologies for off topic, let's get back to the spill

Mac, I'm not so sure this is off topic. Blowhards like Rush are going to help form opinion on this, and possibly shape (detrimentally) the way it is handled, especially since he totally discredits science.

FOXNews.com - Gulf Oil Slick Triples in Size as Rough Seas Thwart Cleanup

The oil slick in the Gulf of Mexico has grown tremendously in just a day or so.

Satellite images analyzed by the University of Miami show the spill has expanded from the size of Rhode Island to something closer to the size of Puerto Rico, close to tripling.

Hans Graber, executive director of the university's Center for Southeastern Tropical Advanced Remote Sensing, said Saturday that the spill is moving faster and expanding much quicker than estimated.

Graber says the size of the slick was about 1,150 square miles on Thursday. By the end of Friday, he says it had tripled to about 3,850 square miles.

And blowhards like Pelosi, Reid and Obama are not going to try to shape opinions? Rush has never cast a vote on the floor of either house nor written any executive orders, yet some of you.....like to blast folks for voicing an opinon, yet don't come anywhere near that kind of righteous indignation when democratic power brokers act and shape the law of the land AGAINST popular opinion.

When Rush can force me to buy healthcare, get a national ID or shut this countries energy resources down...then I'll worry about what he's doing. In the meantime, I say oil rigs need to provide their own security and keep on keeping on. Volcanoes ruin eco systems for years and we can't put any regulation on them at all. As previously stated, you do this much drilling and sooner or later a statistically probable chance of an accident occuring will occur. The timing on these "eco" incidents associated with energy are just freaking lottery winners though.

C'mon RW, the volcano argument??? The engineering exists to prevent diasaters like this, and when all is revealed, we will find that they simply didn't do it. I need to hook you up with a couple of my staunch REPUBLICAN buddies on the Gulf Coast. They could wind up suffering for years over this MAN-MADE disaster.

I just so hope we could observe a little humility from EVERYONE that has a microphone. If the efforts that went into "constant bickering" were spent to repair our nation ... ?

My wife had a tattoo on her arm of her family crest and in latin, when translated, read "Shut up and work." I wish Washington could adopt this motto.

Then it's time to move, deal with it, adapt and overcome!

No, it's not easy but ask them what kind of business they would have or be able to conduct with no freaking electricity or gas/diesel to transport goods and services. Until we wake the freaking greenies up to reality we need to deal with facts. If you want affordable energy you have to produce it. Oil is still the most economical high energy product available for transportation. WE HAVE TO HAVE IT. PERIOD.

Nuclear has to be brought back and advanced NOW, no other solution to electricity, NONE.

or, option 3, buy a horse farm and start raising your next mode of transportation.

It's pretty damn clear what the options are. Take emotion out of this and answer the question. Do you want society to maintain it's current levels of technology or revert back to an agrarian one.

That's what I've been trying to say for awhile. Another approach... don't listen to that crap. I don't

The current administration supports offshore drilling in the Gulf and expanding nuclear power. They also have the right to make sure that they don't have any incidents of mass destruction, like the one going on right now.

In the case of this slick, they had the failsafe in place, it just didn't work. We're not talking about choking those industries. Were talking about requireing them to be responsible, and enforcing it. Those companies don't have the right to destroy other people's property.

Well, actually, there's another failsafe, forget what they called it, in use by most oilrigs off the shore of OTHER countries, but BP doesn't use them, even those they are said to be relatively inexpensive by oil industry standards.

And now, with other previous BP fiascos that could have been just as bad, coming into more light, I'd say that this thing will make some big changes in entire industry.

Here's the scariest part of the whole mess:

Nobody knows WHAT this is going to turn into.

Exxon Valdez had a finite quantity of crude on board, and it was all near shore, and they could get at the SOURCE... this spill is for all practical purposes LIMITLESS until they can quell it at the source.

Even drilling a relief well, which will take months, is no guarantee of really stopping this thing entirely.

I wonder if there is an estimate of just how MUCH oil is potentially IN this deposit, for worst case scenario?

How much more failsafe can you do when you have safety valves under the water at the well head, safety valves at the rig, oversight from several agencies already. Accidents will always happen! Cars, trains, airplanes, bridges, the list is inclusive of everything man builds or does! Even nature likes to mess with the system with storms, volcanoes, earthquakes and gas eruptions under the sea!

I agree it can't just be totally laissez faire but it's a reality that sooner or later it's going to happen.

This administration saying one thing and doing another is status quo. They have already shut down any further operations until this "investigation" is conducted. BHO now has his cake and will eat it to.

"I'm for further exploration BUT it won't happen till this kind of incident cannot occur again". He can then talk to either side and say he's seeking to fullfill their goals.

Well my goal is to be able to drive when I need to, I already cut out unnecessary trips, and be able to do it without taking out a loan.

I do not wish to return to the horse and buggy.

Part will be because of regulation, and part by other means. If this goes as badly as I think it's gonna go, they're gonna get sued in a huge way. I'm gonna check in down there in a few hours.

This! My concern all along.

This talk of failsafes in earlier posts brings up a great question. Just who checks these valves to see that they are operational and how frequent? Why not install more than one inline?

The Exxon Valdez was a single layer hull design. Nobody required the double hull at that point. Why? Why do we wait until after a disaster to add safety precauctions?

If this goes as badly as I think it's gonna go, they're gonna get sued in a huge way.

SCOTUS' decision in 08 sided with Exxon. This very desicion may leave the people of the Gulf holding empty pockets also. Just ask us how well that went.

A jury decided in 1994 that Exxon should pay $5 billion in punitive damages. In 2006, a federal appeals court cut that verdict in half. In June 2008, the U.S. Supreme Court set punitive damages at $507.5 million. That was divided among 35,0000 claimants!

This isn't about Obama.

OF COURSE they shut everything down, just like they did on 911.

I've had a federal license for 30 years, and have had to comply with a lot of regulation. It will go something like this...

1. X failsafe device(s) is required

2, X routine maintenance on the device is required, including testing at x interval

3. Required logging of maintenance procedures and observations in line 2

4. Periodic inpection of logs and facility by federal enforcement

5. Schedule of fines for violations

Yes, they had the divice in place. No, it didn't work. When was it last tested?
