Obtaining a pistol from out of state.

Let me preface this with saying that I am a law abiding citizen and I will never obtain an out of state firearm outside the scope of the law. I would on the other hand, like to save an FFL fee if I can. I understand that you have to go through an FFL to purchase a pistol from out of state. My question is, if a friend is giving me a gun as a gift (with no consideration given other than a "Thank You") does this still have to go through an FFL?

Also, if it does, can he deliver it himself to an FFL and transfer it to me there?

If your friend is a resident of a state other than TN, yes it must go through a FFL. Yes he can transfer it to a local FFL himself, then the FFL can transfer it to you.

Can a person go to the other state and pick it up? I was told this one time a while back? Then all you would be doing is transporting your gun back.

No. You can't do that with a pistol. The pistol must be picked up from a FFL in your state of residence. A rifle or shotgun can be picked up out of state as long as it's from an FFL.
