IMO, cut the end of the stock off just enough to get a flat end on it , add a buttpad to it and you have a perfect lever action carbine. and with it being a takedown version, you could stow it easily in a BOB. its a better option than trying to find a marlin 1894

Ouch... that price smarts.

I've been eye-ballin' '92s myself, and though I'd love to have a real Winchester, I'm thinking I'll end up going in this direction, if I ever get there:

Granted, $820 still ain't cheap, but it certainly hurts less than $1500. A lot less.

And their take-down guns are only about $100 or so more.

yea they are pricey but i bet street price would be considerably less, though i dont know how much.

These days, I wouldn't count on seeing much less than a couple of hundred dollars less than MSRP, if you find one at a gun shop.

As for the curved buttplate... I like 'em just fine, so long as the gun isn't in a caliber that recoils too much.

.45 Colt or .357 mag shouldn't be too bad, but I wouldn't wanna deal with any hot .45-70 loads in a gun that light, with that sort of set-up.

I would love to have one but the price is just a bit too much. I do love the 92's. I have a couple of the 92 clones and you can really slick them up.

Shop around, and I'll bet you can find a decent original for that price.

A tang safety on the Winchesters, from what I read. None on the clones that I'm aware of... though some of the older Pumas have a crossbolt safety, I think. Don't know if they still have that or not.

This is my 1895 with the barrel cut down to 16". It carries great and mounts effortlessly. I love carrying this rifle.

That is nice. I have wanted to cut my 1895 down. Maybe 18 inches. I really like my 1895 I call it the Hammer of Thor. It is a beast. What kind of velocity do you get out of your 16" barrel?

I was browsing the old posts on this great forum and found this post. I just bought a .357 take down in this model and it is really great. I am going to be a little careful about taking it apart since I see it is easy to mar up the mag tube when you un-thread it.

I will try and post a photo. (By the way, I did some trading and got it for about $1,350. Still a little steep, but I have seen nice stuff for about 800-900. I just figured I could stay home from a weekend trip and make up the difference HA!)
