No charges in stabbing death of police dog

Associated Press

Monday, April 26, 2010

ELIZABETHTON, Tenn. — No charges will be filed in the death of an Elizabethton police dog.

The dog — named Yoris — was euthanized after he was stabbed several times during an incident involving a six teenage boys.

The Johnson City Press quoted prosecutor Tony Clark who said three of the boys were taken to a hospital with dog bites and they all separated immediately after the attack, yet gave consistent accounts of what happened. A witnesses confirmed the accounts.

The incident occurred Feb. 6 when the boys — all 14-16 years old — were playing a game called airsoft in a field near Yoris’ pen.

Investigators found strong wind had twisted the enclosure, allowing the dog to squeeze past the gate.

The officer who was Yoris’ handler, Shane Darling, was out of state at the time.

More details as they develop online and in Tuesday’s News Sentinel.

On a more sober note, this is a sad story. I am a great fan of the fearless police dog. He will readily give his all to defend his master and eat up bad guys. It is a sad day when they get out of their pens and eat up the neighbors (...which appears to be what happened here...). It is sad, indeed.

Yoris -- Rest in Peace

Very sad indeed. A lot of thoughts both ways, for the dog, for the boys. In the end, I see that the boys, unless they had been harassing the dog, did what any of us would do, defend themselves. I feel certain a lot of agencies will review their policies on off duty K9 containment. I know a FL dog handler and this dog escape scenario was one he was concerned about.

Sounds like the boys were defending themselves. Don't know the full story but that's what it appears to be at first glance. I'd do the same if a dog, police dog or not, were to begin attacking me unprovoked.

The dog has probably been trained to react to guns, a lot of airsoft guns are looking more and more like the real deal. For a dog, the difference is not distinguishable. The boys are probably innocent and the dog was just doing what he though was right, a sad situation here.

That's what I was thinking. Definately a sad situation in which the dog was most likely trying to eliminate what he was trained to see as a threat. On the other end of things the boys were just defending themselves. IMO the officer in charge of the dog is to blame for the incident, and should possibly end up getting some kinda punishment out of it.
