James Goldberg of Glastonbury, Conn., recently was arrested for carrying a firearm at his

neighborhood Chili's restaurant, and his release because his actions were legal has sparked

a major debate over the Second Amendment.

But the legislative director for the Massachusetts Gun Owners Action League,

Jim Wallace, contends the case is evidence of the successful work of gun opponents

in demonizing the hardware itself, using fear to crack down on a legal activity.

"I am not quite sure what the hysteria is about people carrying anything," Wallace said.

"If police officers carry openly, is the general public scared? They shouldn't be.

Nor should they be scared if their fellow citizens are doing the same thing.

The problem is the irrational stigma, probably created by the media, about

guns themselves," Wallace said.

People think that just because something makes them feel "uncomfortable", then it must be either illegal or immoral. So much for relying on feelings.

BTW... with the addition of all the shall issue states, I can't help but believe that this will get better over time.

I disagree, the shall issue states don't view carry as a right, the view it as a privilege and do all sorts of things to trample that privilege...

Shall Issue was a nice stepping stone, but VT style carry should be the end goal. They can offer a license for those of us who want to be able to carry out of state, but anybody who can legally own a firearm should be able to carry said firearm anywhere a law enforcement officer can. VT law isn't completely gold standard in that respect, but it's getting pretty close compared to TN.

At the very least, unlicensed open carry of any firearm should be made the law of TN.

Doesn't seem to me that the founders intended for law-abiding citizens to have to have permission from the local, state, or federal government to be able to protect themselves and their loved ones. At least that's the way I interpret the Second Amendment.

Exactly. The entire anti-gun bias is based on a completely unfounded 'what if' type thought processes. The anti-gun proponents say "something bad might happen if people have guns so we need to take guns away so that I will feel safer". They completely ignore the facts that those mythical bad things don't (or very very rarely) happen.

You missed my point. The more carry permits that are issued, the more common gun carry BY CITIZENS will become.

I love the saying about snakes. That actually drives your point home fairly well - to me.
